Hi everybody,

My mp980 started to make a rattling sound when I turn it on. I spoke with a guy at an authorized service shop and he told me that theres nothing to be done but wait for the printer to "die" because the cost of repairing it is too high!

Can I do something to save my printer?

edit: now it displays an "error 5C00", which as far as I know has to do with the draining unit...
Any ideas?

The draining unit is also known as the purge unit. It's position is under the print head, when the print head is parked. It is located at the right when you view the printer from the front. One cause of the 5C00 error message is foreign material, paper scraps or other, so check the purge unit for foreign material debris.

To get better access to the purge unit the scanner and the top of enclosure should be removed. The service manual has an instruction for disassembling the printer. See this post for a link to the service manual. As mentioned in that post the server is very slow to respond and not always on line. It works at this moment of posting, but I had to wait several minutes (!) for the .pdf file to load completely. If the server times out, try again later or another day, don't give up!

Thank you for the thumbs up!

I've got the service manual and now I have to make up time (and space) to take the printer apart. I've tried to take a look into the purge unit using a flashlight, but there seems to be nothing in the way. I'll try to disassemble it, in hope that I don't screw things up in the process!

Hi again!

Still haven't got the time to perform the operation... But I have the opportunity to get my hands on some ip 4300 parts.
I Googled for its service manual but without success. Does anyone have it? Or can anyone tell me if any ip 4300 parts (purge unit i.e)
can be used for my MP980?

Which service manual didn't you get?

The service manual for Canon MP980 is found here: ftp://mail.racs.co.bw/Canon/From%20Canon%20Training/2h2008%20IJ%20training/Service%20Information/Service%20Manuals/MP980/MP980_ServiceMANUAL_E.pdf
and the server works at the moment of posting. Sadly the parts catalog for the MP980 seems nowhere to be found.

A combined simplified service manual and parts catalog for the iP4300 is found here: http://www.gondack.com.ar/media/useruploads/files/ip4300-ssm.pdf

The MP980 and iP4300 are different generations, so the print engine in the MP980 is not iP4300 so I don't think a purge unit from an iP4300 will fit an MP980.

I meant the one for the ip 4300. Thank God, I found that of the MP980 so I'll know at least what to do with the leftover screws after re-assembling :)

If what you are saying is correct, then I'm in trouble. Because I can't see any obvious foreign objects in the purge unit, I have a grim feeling I'll have to replace something in there...
And last time I've checked, a purge unit costs about 80-90 euros if I order it via internet. Here in Greece I didn't manage to find any spare parts.

@Erkhamion, Are you sure the purge unit is not just bunged up with dried ink, have you tried any maintenance on it to see if you can get it to function, these purge pumps are sturdy units..

I think this cause of the error is likely. Using the forum's search function on "purge unit" I found a lot of posts. I have selected a handful of posts that I think might be helpful. The numbers are links. 1 2 3 4 5

This is a possibility, because I haven't manage to disassemble the MP980 yet. I was just able to "fish" the two rugh pads out, partially clean them and put them back in place. No luck.

Thank you for the links! I push my self to make the time and find the courage to disassemble my printer. I'm procrastinating in fear of failing to re-assemble...

Today is the day.... I powered it up to remove the cartridges and after a prolonged rattling it showed 5C20 error. In the service manual this is referred as "Purge drive system unit". Wish me luck...
