While working on a couple of (old) Canon printers, both of which had, by the way,
given good service for years, I went out and bought an MP620B so as to have a
backup printer available. Remorse, remorse! These are on sale right now at Best
Buy, Walmart and probably other stores for $99 (against MSRP $149) but I
suggest you do not bite on this deal.

I had seen reports of Canon drastically reducing their quality and now I'm sure.
Some folks have pointed out that Canon has replaced a good, solid steel-rod
printhead carriage rail with a piece of bent sheet metal but I wasn't sure
about this model. Now I'm sure. The MP620 carriage rail is a flimsy piece of bent
sheet metal. With the slightest pressure you can even see it flex. This I don't need.

Fortunately, I can return it as defective as it won't install on any of three
different computers. Something wrong with the USB connection and all
three computers, none of which has any USB problem, are unable to detect
the presence of this printer.

So, back to Best Buy, dog! And don't try barking out of your box 'cuz I
ain't hearin' it.
Sorry Canon, I used to love your printers and for years wouldn't have
anything else but now the romance is over and I gotta' find another
flame. Bye, bye!

Worse yet. The aborted install dropped Windows into diagnostic mode.

Canon! Canon! Wherefore art thou?

Before you totally give up on Canon, try to find one of the better models from either Craigslist or E-Bay. Within the last year I have gotten two ip4500s and one ip4200, all brand new, from the Philadelphia Craigslist. The two ip4500s were gotten with a camera and a computer, and the owners had no need for them. Their loss - my gain. See you are listed as in PA also, but what area?

When the consumer only looks at price and nothing else, then Canon has to resort to this.
Consumers have forgotten that quality will provide long term satisfaction but it comes at a cost. BTW even the revered Toyota has resorted to these quality reductions with each generation getting "cheaper" to someone knowing something about cars and durability. The reductions are well hidden and will not show early. One again the latest models of BCI-6 printers and the generation of the CLI-8 printers are Canon's best and frankly I could not see how they could get better and sadly they did not.

Right and right again. I've thought about Ebay and seen a couple of possiblitites there. It may be the best move.

on30trainman,

Good suggestion. I've taken it and found an MP160 for $70. What a difference. About a year old, little used.
Perfect condition and very clean. The poor guy had no idea what he was letting go. But maybe he needed
the money. I don't know but it's a nice machine and built as it should be.
Also, I got an ip4000. Clean but a little more touchy as the print head was worn. Five years old, more heavily
used than the seller realized but I snagged it for $30. I'm sure the print engine will last a lot longer, so I've
taken a chance on a new print head. Risky, but I think it'll work out

Thanks for the suggestion. BTW, I'm north of Pittsburgh.
