In this thread I discuss a problem I was having with my filament.

I decided to take my 20+ year old dehydrator and modify it a bit to dry out the filament and remove moisture.

I could have just cut-up the trays, but I may want to use them someday...

So, I just took some cardboard and clear plastic (2 liter soda bottle) and made this:

You can see the mini-roll of filament and the desiccant I dried out.

I dried the filament for 2 hours at 115 F. and it worked great! (I'll probably dry it out longer next time).

Great job Nifty, might also be just the job for making sure PETG ABS etc are dry before use .

I wouldn't have thought otherwise :celebrate

I know you have been wanting to keep the PETG dry so will no doubt come up with a plan ;)

I'm thinking about making an air-tight box to keep my roll in, similar to this:

Great work, Nifty!

I need to do something like this. I've often wanted to dry a spool of filament - just to be safe, I've not had any problems so far.

I'm not allowed to use the kitchen oven for this, even though I insist it's completely safe (some of my credibility disappeared a few years ago when I was refilling a cartridge and a slight accident resulted in me and the carpet getting covered with magenta ink).

So I want to get a stand alone dehydrator. Unfortunately I'll have to buy one.

@The Hat If you do anything on this, please let us know.

I like it! Much more practical than a standalone dehydrator. :thumbsup

I bet your "significant other" goes shopping for a few hours, you just have to wait your chance :)

That is the very thing I was thinking about making, I was just waiting to get to Ikea to get a seal box big enough for 3 spools, something like this.

All I need now is some excuse to go there without arousing suspicion. :hu
The Silica gel will be a lot harder to source, the prices here are way over the top...
P.S. don't be tempted to use the quick way... The Microwave... :barnie
