Hi all,

I am after either an A3 or A4 laser printer that can print on heavier papers and the thickest card stock. I will mainly be using it for foiling, hence the reason for it needing to be a laser printer. Obviously it will make more sense if it has a straight path to avoid jamming and curling. I will mainly be using black toner only rather than colour, so maybe a printer that has larger mono cartridges available would be beneficial. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,

M

Hi Mark, You may have to go a few rounds on the internet printer sites to find a suitable printer to meet your needs.

What you need is a printer with a straight path manual feeder on the rear with only about a 10 degree angle, I use a Samsung ML series printer for just the same reason and it can print on 400 gm. Alabaster round cornered gilt edge invitations all be it slowly, single feed on anything is never fast..

Thanks for getting in touch so quickly. I will check out that series, and wait to see what other people recommend too. All the best - M

I am so glad that you asked this question!!! Because I also need a Laser printer for the exact same reason. And I also need it to print on 300gsm to 400gsm.
It does not have to be colour printer.
Did You find a good printer that can handle 300+gsm, Mark?
@ The Hat, will you please tell me what Samsung Ml printer you use?
Thank you so much!
I have a small home business and I want to start doing my own Printing instead of Printing labs. I am saving up for an Epson SureColour but I also need a Laser printer for Foiling.

Hi Anneli,

I found that the Samsung can handle upto 220gsm but the fusing isn't great and had very mixed results. I think that alot of the modern toners have a higher plastic and wax content. I have some Brother samples but they can only print upto 170gsm. My advice would be find local printers that have larger format laser printers rather than desktop styles as generally they can print between 300-400gsm and go from there. Alot of trial and error and you should get it sorted. :)

Thank you so much Mark.
I was actually concerned about the wax content as I see newer toners stating that they have Higher wax content and I wondered how that will effect the foil fusing with carbon.

One of the best ways to increase adhesion is to use the printer for several plain test sheets first that way the increased running temperature holds the toner better on the board, I use an Ml 1450, all dough old in the tooth, it still prints as crisp as the day I first got it, I only use OEM cartridges.

My only problem is still trying to find a source of foil, and to set the laminator as hot as it will go..

Thank you very much The Hat. This is very helpful!
I hope I will find a newer Samsung ML that will do the same as the ML1450.
I have heard some people complaining that the older printers could handle a lot heavier card than the newer printers.
I hope to find a printer soon, I have a new "Foiling System" and could not yet use it as I would like.

I have a local (I am in South Africa) online shop where i buy my Foil, they import from the US.
I hope you find a source for your foil soon!!

I should just go look, but what the heck is "foiling"...? Am probably going to replace my malfunctioning color laser with something that won't balk at envelopes, let alone heavy stock. Do I have to spend a fortune?

Gold Foiling can be done using a laser printer to create beautiful presentation cards.
