Grandad35:

You have explained why I do not care for WinXP firewall or any firewall that does not alert to an app attempting to make an outside connection.

Some people, including either Steve Gibson or someone interviewed by him on http://www.grc.com/intro.htm, think that outgoing firewall protection is not that important. Yours is a case of precisely why it IS important. Some may argue that better vigilance and wiser choices of what to click on or run are sufficient. I disagree. No one is impervious to everything.

The warnings by the IT department and WinZip are generic, just like many advertisements are geared for someone with an 8th grade education. Keeping directions aimed at the lowest common denominator helps improve the message is understood and followed.

The listing I provided will keep you out of trouble concerning graphics files. I respect your paranoia. What a mess!

Just curious, how were you infected in the first place?

About the links Token posted - the websites are all kosher and the JPG files are legit. Maybe my internet security software is automatically blocking out malicious or malisious-looking popups or cookies, but I see nothing wrong about anything that Token linked to. If anything were safe it would be Rapidshare (unless Token linked to a faux site or it was hijacked by external forces - none of which occurred).

For PC's, I highly recommend a simple, very effective, and free HOSTS-based blocker to filter out known crap. I used the very automated and flexible B.I.S.S. Hosts Manager at http://blocklistpro.com/biss/downloads.html. This is an adjunct application in addition to a quality Firewall and Anti-viral/Anti-Spyware apps.

I have a Grade eight education and I don't care to be patronized.

Is it better than Spybot hosts list?

I don't know - haven't tried Spybot's HOSTS file.

B.I.S.S. Hosts Manager currently has 82559 IP addresses listed in my HOSTS file. About a half dozen of these I entered myself. The rest are from updating and then appending the new update to my previous list.

I liked the GUI that B.I.S.S. used, so I went with it.

I have noticed a couple of websites are blocked that I might use on rare occasions, such as tinyurl.com, but I can workaround these rare instances using one of several methods.

Epson, Canon, HP... A "few"
To quote Brian of Monty Python fame, we're all individual and in my world, if my mother gets it I've explained it so that:
- a 5 year old thinks I'm being patronising
- a 60 year thinks I finally made sense
- a teenager figures they should have plugged in their iPod and ignored me because what do I know.

I figured that Grandad was trying to help, not remonstrate a small child of 53..

Just a thought...

Scratching head a bit with your comment.

Do you think I was belittling Grandad35?

If yes, how so?

Current antivirus programs, although very mature, are not sufficient. For example some of them still allow USB flash drives with autorun.inf files on them without warning the user of a potential malware infection.

Host intrusion prevention is the new additional requirement in security, and there is a free firewall called Comodo which implements it very well. It records all known applications in a system and marks them as safe and then warns the user for any new process trying to run (as well as some behavior-based activities). For example, even if Winzip is a trusted application you would still get a warning if you extracted an executable file. Or it would warn against an application trying to access the keyboard directly (such as a keylogger).

That said, Comodo is not an antivirus (despite the developers efforts, they still have a long way to go). But combined with a good antivirus such as Antivir or NOD32 it is becomes a formiddable protection layer.

Panos:

Precisely the points I made earlier. I should have used the terminology "HIPS" when I spoke of outgoing firewall protection so that readers knew what specifically to look for. HIPS is not new, though it was new to Windows with their Vista OS, IIRC

I didn't care to get into a disscusion of what AV product is best, but now that you have broached the topic, I think it is important to look at third-party evaluations of security software. Of the several that I look at from time to time, one in particular stands out IMO:

http://www.av-comparatives.org/comparativesreviews/main-tests.

If interested, look at both the May 2009 Retrospective/Proactive Test and the Feb. 2009 On-demand Comparative to get a complete picture. NOD32 is, as usual, one of the best AV apps, though there are a couple others that are fantastic too. Comodo firewall is top notch, too.

For most people, I believe an all-in-one Internet Security app is the way to go. Enthusiasts and those that choose to use only freeware apps can piecemeal their protection and be reasonably confident as well since the biggest obstacle to protection is the curiosity/carelessness of the user.

Some other websites to evaluate security apps include:

When I took a stab at your picture the cyan and green seems to be misfiring, they are not clogged.

You can try to use scotch tape brand name "magic tape". To clean the nozzles. Make sure you put your had on some paper towel first because your scotch tape will not stick otherwise. Just gently stick the tape and remove it.

This method has helped me numerous times with problems like this. Also it seems safe too. Just don't use the wrong type of tape.
