Hi,

After my Canon i865 died a few months back i bought a IP4500 which came with a spare set of oem carts, unfortunately they are now nearly empty and i`m looking for replacements.

I have read a lot about chipping & refilling carts but i would like to know if the cartridges i see available on Ebay & in shops online are plug & print.

Any one have a link for a good cheap supplier please.

Thx J4ck

Welcome to the Forum.I recently bought a Canon MP610 which uses the same carts as your IP4500 and came to this forum which has many
knowledgeable people skilled in the art of refilling. Most people here prefer to refill only the original Canon cartridges by the "German Method" which is easy and mess free after you have done it a few times. Go to http://www.druckerchannel.de/artikel.php?ID=1830&t=refill_canon_pixma_cli_8_pgi_5_cartridges for the method etc.,also do a search on this forum for posts by Pharmacist were you will learn a lot about filling these carts. You will need a chip resetter which I bought from here http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/COMPATIBLE-CA...zen .hash=item3353d17eae&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14 I have reset about a dozen carts without problems. As for ink in the UK I have tried rhe Jettec R46 refill kit made especially for these carts and the results appeared to be equal to the original ink although at 10 approx for 4x30ml bottles is maybe not very cost effective.More recently I purchased 5x100ml bottles from http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/500ML-5-BOTTL...ash=item334ff9b75d&_trksid=p4634.c0.m14.l1262 for 13.49 delivered.I have tried this and colourwise it looks good but as yet have not printed extensively with it. I don't think its sourced from the Far East and it may be American, anyway its always hard to tell what you are getting with ink but this NOT universal ink as so many cheap inks are but formulated for the CLI-8 cartridges and unlike some, one of the BLacks is pigmented ink for the PG5 cart so it is more cost effective than the Jettec and it is ISO9001 2000 certified so should be of reasonable quality.Incidentally you don't necessarily need a chip resetter but without it you lose the ink monitor and whilst you can still print you will need to keep tabs on the ink levels visually yourself - which is a bit of a pain.Once you have mastered this technique which is not difficult you will be able to refill a cart in a couple of minutes and you will save a lot of money.Do spend some time reading the very informative posts on this form and you should be OK.Good luck
P.S. Empty OEM carts are regularly avalble cheaply on e-Bay which allows you to keep a bckup set already filled.

Thx for the great reply petrocelli,

I have done a LOT of reading over the weekend & feel the way forward is the German method of refilling combined with a chip ressetter.

With regards to the ink does anyone know if there is a supplier of Hobbicolors ink, Precision colors or Inktec ink in the UK or do i have to ship from the states?

Thx J4ck

HobbiColors ink can only be purchased via e-bay,dont'know if you will have to pay VAT or customs duty to UK.Somebody who has bought it from the UK may come on and advise. The other ink you mention can be bought here http://www.inktecshop.co.uk/acatalog/Canon_Ink_Refill_Kits.html and also at http://www.proprint.co.uk/canon_ink.htm although I notice that Proprint do not specifically state the ink on the link page is INKTEC it talks about it being formulated especially for CLi-8 carts.have a look at this page http://www.proprint.co.uk/stockists.htm
As I said in my original reply its difficult to know what you are getting with bulk ink except in the case maybe of Hobbicolors who apparently don't sell anything other brand of ink and the amount of people who use it on here is high recomendation indeed.
Cheers!

Location
East Midlands, UK
I have bought Hobbicolors ink several times, imported into the UK, because ...
1. It comes with independant recommendations on the web (few UK suppliers can claim that).
2. It definitely includes pigment black (many UK suppliers claim their ink is "compatible", but sell dye black instead of pigment black).
3. No UK supplier can match the price, even after including international freight charges (20 inc postage for 360ml ink plus a couple of syringes http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260529849268 ). Petrocelli's previous link to 500ml for 13.49 looks a bargain until you notice it's all dye ink (read lower down the ad).

and
4. From personal experience, they are a reliable supplier.

BUT, and it is a big BUT, it is only possible to import small quantities without incurring additional VAT and customs charges (as mentioned by Petrocelli). If you are lucky, a larger purchase may slip through unnoticed, but the rules for imports from the US are (to the best of my knowledge) ...
1. Customs duty is payable on commercial goods valued over 120.
2. VAT is payable on commercial goods valued over 18.
3. Customs duty is payable on gifts valued over 36.

and
4. There is a Royal Mail handling fee of 9 if Royal Mail have to collect any of the above charges.

The above values are the declared customs valuation of the goods, excluding postage costs. If this is not 100% accurate, it is certainly something like this.
