Invitation to Test other Printer Profiles by Exchange

I have been struggling to achieve satisfactory printer profiles with my current set up. Which is Spyder3 monitor calibration, SpyderPRINT printer profile generation and a Canon Pixma Pro 9000 ll printer with OctoInkJet (Image Specialists) inks.

There are many opinions about the differing profiling instruments. But it is an expensive process for any individual to evaluate a range of models.

It occurred to me that if I could find another member in the uk with, say a ColorMonkey setup, we could exchange target image files by email, print these on our own printer and paper and return the prints by post for profile generation. The profiles could then be exchange via email.

If there are members in this forum who are interested in carrying out reciprocal tests, it may prove to be an ideal way to gain knowledge and experience.

Subject to approval of the Forum management, I am proposing that interested members, who are already experienced in the use of an existing profiling system, make contact through the Forum, stating their model in use and the model of interest with the object of pairing up with others. Working in pairs would minimise the work load, which could be onerous if larger groups were formed.

So my first question is do the management approve this use of the Forum, and subsequently are any members interested.

Regards

Ian

You might want to read the terms and conditions that you accepted when you installed your profile software, since most of these single user packages place restrictions on making profiles for others. What you propose might be OK since it is not providing a service for pay, but you should check it out first.

As a reference, here is a section of the agreement for my I1 Photo:

Note that this agreement prohibits (c-ii) what you propose unless you travel to the other persons house to generate the profile.

As Grandad35 mentioned, it really will depend on the terms / use policies. It's very hard for us to know one way or another, but if it falls within legal use, we're fine with it.

One moment: there is way to overcome this problem providing you have Colormunki Photo/Design by using the ArgyllCMS GNU program. This way the produced profiles can be generated and be used and freely distributable to anyone he/she wishes to give to. This is not allowed with the Colormunki software and the profiles produced with this software.

I can produce profiles for others using ArgyllCMS for the cost of a few sheets of the photo paper, so I can do experiments on and to see if I like it on my Epson Pro 3800 and R3000 and redistribute these profiles to others, providing they use the same ink set. Please contact me via PM for details.

Hi all

Yes, I had a feeling this would come up, hence my request for approval. My conditions, I think may allow this, but will need re-reading.

I think we might leave the matter on hold and accept legal views on the matter if others have them.
