This looks like ink starvation.

Initially there is enough ink in the print head or at the ink exit port of the cartridge to start printing properly but the lack of continued ink feeding the print head caused the funnel-like streaking lack of ink until there is no ink printed at all. If there is ink still left in the cartridge, letting the printer rest long enough in between print jobs will allow for ink to slowly accumulate at the ink exit port again for a temporary reprieve.

A new ink cartridge should resolve this.

Flushing and then refilling the old cartridges should resolve this as well. Another cause of this is if the cartridge has a sponge inside it and the sponge is askew. Reseating the sponge may resolve the issue. Of course, an empty cartridge will cause this issue, too.

You can stop panicking, because your problem is only your black cartridge, if the other cart prints the same then your going to need a new black cart or you’ll have to clean the OEM cart out and refill it again.

That’s why I asked you to perform these test prints, you have a classic case of ink starvation in the black cartridge... ;)

True. As a safeguard against smearing, I think eBay (and USPS) is fine with clear tape over the sender and receiver addresses BUT NOT the barcodes. Barcode readers may not be able to read the barcode with tape over them but the conventional addresses written out are OK as they are read by the human eye.

Check with eBay and USPS to make sure!

USPS instructions do say to not cover the barcode with tape, but I get packages from them all the time with it covered.

I guess I forgot in the beginning to say that I had just tried 2 new generic cartridges. Before that I had used a re-filled OEM cartridge. Just now I refilled a different OEM cartridge and so far I have printed 5 normal test prints. I hope the problem is solved but I'm not convinced because this seems to be the pattern... A cartridge change works for a while. It also seems weird that 2 different brands of generic would be doing that in the black only doesn't it?

I also have a 9000 II, running on non OEM ink, for a number of years, with one print head replacement a few years back.

Have you cleaned the two print head parking places with a few cc of Lidl Window Cleaner from a syringe. This left to soak for a few minutes, is sucked through into the waste tank at switch on and leaves the parking pad bright and clean.

Good luck!
can you elaborate a little bit and explain this a little more? I'm not quite sure what you mean

Hi Helen,

The print head parking place is on the right hand side and visible with a torch, when the carriage is in the cartridge loading position.

If you remove the mains plug, without switching the printer off, when the carriage is in the loading position, you will find you can push the carriage to the left out of the way.

The parking places are perforated with many holes and connected to a suction pump. They are usually covered with waste ink. If they are blocked the printhead may not be cleaned properly. It is a simple task to inject a small amount of cleaning fluid, usually window cleaner, with a syringe or similar. I usually use kitchen paper towel to blot them clean, but the printer will do it for you. There are also "wiper blades" around the edges which need to be cleaned.

I hope this is clearer!:)

It certainly is and thank you so much. I do remember now reading something about that years ago, but never had to do that. I will give it a try.
