Ink Flow Problem

GHWellsJr: You were right! The left side door was off its hinge. I had seen a switch on the left side that I was pretty sure detected that the door was closed and it didn't seem to operate properly. Now the door closes nice and smooth.

This printer is now printing just like new. My wife is very happy that she can now print out a manual that she has been waiting weeks to print.

This has been quite a learning experience. I feel pretty confident about making future repairs. My wife just picked up an old ip4200 at a thrift store that I will look at after I replace the heating coil in our dishwasher.

Jaxink,...To summaries this entire thread,...you started out with a bad nozzle check with the black head printing very bad. No amount of cleaning help,...so then you took the printer apart. After cleaning the top of the purge unit you took the suction tube off of the black ink pad and injected Windex and/or hot water into the tube and flushed it out. After you put the unit back together you got a new error message that the paper exit door was open. After additional investigation you found that when the printer was put back together, one of the front door hinges was not connect and the door did not close good enough to actuate the "Switch". Once you fixed the hinge and printed a new "Nozzle Test",..everything is back to 100%. Good job after a lot of work and much patients.

This does show you how carefull you must be in take the printer apart,...and getting it back together correctly.

Yes, I guess this sums it up. I did squirt a little windex into the purge unit itself.

One note, taking off the outer case of my ip4500 was a bear. There was no problem with the screwdriver activated latches but those two hidden hooks inside the case were really hard to get released - especially the one on the right side. The video I found on youtube to remove the outer case shows this to be really easy to do. It wasn't. Removing the bottom case to get to the purge unit wasn't all that bad. Just remove a handful of screws.

It was probably my bad luck that the front door came unhinged.

I think most of my problems with the PGI-PBK ink cartridge was with a refilled cart. Do you have a good recomendation for a good ink for this cart?

I am still working on my latest acquistion, a ip4200 we got for $15 at a thrift store. I washed the head throughly and it should be dry and ready to test. The yellow cart that was in the printer looks back on the bottom half of the sponge. Do you have a good link on washing out these old carts, especially for the PGI-PBK carts?
