Impossibly cheap cartridges with chip?

If I follow the experts, I need to get another set of OEM cartridges and a chip resetter as my first step. YES
Are transparent cartridges that I see being refilled, OEM? DEPENDS ON CART WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING AT SPECIFICALLY
If not, lots of folks seem to use them. ARE YOU REFERING TO AUTO RESET CHIP REFIL CARTS?
Where do I obtain OEM cartridges? ANY STORE THAT SELLS INK CARTS
Ink Is the large Black dye and the colors pigment or vice versa? LARGE BLACK CART IS PIGMENT (CART NUMBER BEGINS P) SMALLER ONES ARE DYE (CART NUMBER BEGINS WITH A C)
Where to buy ink? DEPENDS WHERE IN THE WORLD YOU ARE, IF USA PRECISION COLOURS WOULD BE WHERE I WOULD AT LEAST LOOK FIRST

These are the top filling method. After reading advice here, most seem to prefer the German method at the bottom front.

Is there a drawback in using the top/plug method?

Expense and practicality.

Do I need 2 sets of transparent, or can I refill and immediately use the cartridge?

Is transferring chips a hazard to their health? Is it easy to do?

Top fill or German fill are both fine with original Canon carts both give IMO equal results. It is just a matter of preference more than anything.

You do not need 2 sets, you can refill and use basically straight away, i personally have 2 sets of of original carts for my printer, more in case one runs out and at the time i can not be bothered to refill it at that moment or am in a rush to finish a print job so i can just install another cart.

If you buy a set of "Set of 5 PG220BK, CLI-221C,M,Y,BK" from Precisioncolors they come with PGI225/CLI226 chips already installed and ready to run in your printer. For the sake of $35 for the carts and around $30 for the ink (depends on if you buy separate bottles, a kit and their size) that would be my route, $70(ish) in total will get you a reliable set up that can be refilled over and over with a set of ink included which should give you (again depending on ink bottle size you buy) around 7 refills per 4oz bottle right from the off (that works out without getting the calculator something like 50cents each time you refill a single cart) ALSO then there is NO need to transfer chips.

Ive never transfered chips, and do not have any of these model carts to try it with. If the chips are a proper circuit board like old CLI8 carts its an easy job, if the chip is paper or a thin film then no it is not easy (check the chip on your cartridges). Theres also probably a thread on here already about chip swapping those models of carts, a quick search should yield more help on that front.

For anyone who tried both methods and has a preference it would be valuable to see posts from them. I know one of our long standing members was a "top filler", tried the German method, and went back to top filling again. That's not to say that you would have the same experience.

I bought 2 sets of carts for my MP610 (PGI5 and CLI 8 carts) to start and immediately tried one set top fill and the other German fill, both methods i found in terms of ease and reliability to basically be no different and have given no issues, i would not even say i had a preference. Id probably if pushed go top fill in future just in case regular inserting of the syringe via german method over time destroys the internal sponge.

Neither is better both have ups and downsides, top fill you have to make sure you seal the top hole, german fill you have to pierce (to a degree) the internal sponge.

DO NOT refill with the cart in the printer, remove cart, reset, then fill it, regardless of its level.

ARC chips are auto reset chips, you can as good as forget about them unless you are going for aftermarket refillable carts. WHich in your printers model case i would not.

My refilling stated with the CLI-8 carts following the instructions on this site.

I started with the German method because piercing the small hole in front seemed less intimidating than removing the ball, drilling and and inserting the plug.

I worked fine and was a lot simpler than I expected.

However, when I realized that I was supposed to replace several cartridges at a time, some only partially empty, I noticed some bubbly ink would escape through the bottom feed hole. Not a major problem - but sometimes a bit messy.

After several refills, and reading the advice on this site decided to clean, rinse and purge my carts as the sponges seemed to be filling with grunge.

I found the top fill method made for easier cleaning and purging the carts, and have stuck with that method ever since.

Both work fine and in my opinion is mainly personal preference.

I installed the printer today using the CD. Everything went smoothly.
Both my wife and I were impressed with the Canon test print..
The Pigment cartridge shows full.
The 4 dye cartridges are low.
Since we print 90%+ Black, can we limp along for a time until I obtain the 4 dye carts?

I am leaning towards top fill.
I need 4 top fill color carts for dye ink.
We are not critical color users.
Will my Brother 3rd part inks that I have used for years be OK for the Canon?
