I bought my Brother printers second hand, like you did. I have a 4110 and 4510 and these have other chips than xx20 models. The 4110 has the initial carts and I can reset these. I can't imagine that the initial carts have chips that cannot be reset, because if I were Brother I would install these chips on all cartridges then.
You mean you are using non-Brother refillable carts? These chips cannot be reset, I believe.
If you have Brother initial carts, I would invest in a chip resetter and if they cannot be reset, then invest in a genuine set. You'll earn back the investment for sure.
