Pardon my slight disagreement, but you know more than "bugger all". You had a problem with the German method and fixed it by making the needle entry hole a bit bigger which allowed you to move the needle around to find the small entry into the ink chamber. And you had zero problems after that.
IMHO you've learned a lot about refilling.
