Hi guys,

I have a HP Photosmart c6380 with refillable cartridges. Now the color ones work great. No issues. But I cant get it to print black ink in a refillable cartridge. It tells me that the cartridge is depleted when i install the black xl refillable cartridge. I press ok to dismiss the error. But when I goto print the page is always blank.

Note: I have two black refillable cartridges each with a chip on them and they both have this cartridge is depleted error. Do you think both chips are bad? When I use a genuine black HP cartridge with the refillable color ones it prints fine.

The cartridge-depleted error is normal. It just means that you used up all the ink, which you did. There's no way to reset the chip, so it has no way of finding out that it's full again.

The nonprinting means either that there is an electrical defect or bad contact, or ink is not flowing into the print head, or the purge unit is not working. You didn't get a cartridge-missing error, so I think you can rule out a bad contact. You can check the cartridge. If you touch the outlet with a piece of tissue, ink should immediately begin to wick into the tissue. (Also, while you are at it, check for ink around the cartridge vent. This would be a sign of a plugged vent.) A purge unit problem or electrical problem is too ugly to think about, so let's not go there.

I am guessing that the most likely cause is air in the print head. Did you do a cleaning cycle? This would suck ink into the printhead, and you would hopefully be in business again.

You might try to kick-start the printhead by dripping some ink to the ink outlet to fill it with ink instead of air, I think! That should be the job of the purge unit, actually.
