Inside HP 685 Ink Cartridge

A few days ago, I found a used HP 685 Magenta in a trash bin near my house, so I picked it up. I decided to tear it apart to actually see what's in there. My assumption is that HP 685 is similar to HP 564 and some others.

However, this teardown revealed that HP685 is quite different!

This is the HP 685 Magenta. It's very similar to HP564 Magenta, but there's no XL version of it.

Look very very similar to HP 564.

At the top, I tried drilling a hole where it supposes to go to the ink chamber, which on HP 564 is sealed and not linked to the sponge part.

I actually made a test by filling ink to the drilled hole, to see if they come out at the outlet port or not. And it surprised me that even after I filled and sealed the hole, ink continued to leak until empty.

Surprised! There is no wall or ink chamber at all! Just one big space and a sponge. This explain the above leakage!

Close look.

And here is a second surprise: I thought the sponge would be in 2 pieces (not counting the outlet sponge), but HP 685 only has one single sponge.

Excellent photo series. :) The cheap (?) design also surprises me.

As these cartridges seem only to come in regular, not XL size, in stead of using the more complicated and expensive (?) design with separate ink and sponge compartments, a simpler design with only one compartment is used. If HP should decide to introduce an XL cartridge a larger sponge could be used with no other changes to the cartridge design.

For many years HP has reduced the sponge size to reduce cartridge capacity for the combined sponge/print head cartridges.

An example: This is the HP60 XL and this is the regular HP60. Notice the difference in sponge size.

Hey bro how are you? How is your printer working? You know I also did the same with the magenta.. very surprised..

You know I have seen somewhere on the youtube that this cartridge has dummy chamber and its useless we can not fill the chamber with ink..

Actually, I think that we can buy the HP 564 or 364 XL version and pop out the chip, then replace it with corresponding 685 chip. I assume the latch and cut and clip positions are compatible. Then we have HP 685 "XL" version :D
If I can buy my printer again I would seek for a cheap Officejet Pro because their ink cartridges don't use sponge but use a kind of plastic bag or no sponge/bag at all (HP 970/971XL for the Officejet Pro X series) with very high capacity of ink, and their contact is very similar to Epson's that makes it air-tight perfect and can be use with CISS better.

Yes , you are right. The sponge system is little bit complex in nature and HP made this very complex the therefore it create troubles while refilling.

Hmm..good idea of using XL cartridges :)..

Today, I just found out that my Magenta cartridge has an ink flow issue. I've purged it with water, and then with ethanol 90% (ethanol is easier to buy than IPA in my area). Then I refilled it again and there doesn't seem to improve much. Then I decided to purge them again and try with a newly bought Magenta ink bottle (Ink-Mate - there are only 3 options in my area: Ink-Mate, Inktec, and cheap China ink).
When opening the bottle, I recognized that there's something a bit different between the old ink bottle (about 1 year old) and this new bottle: the ink in the new bottle looks and smells fresher, the color looks "brighter" and not as magenta-dark and dull like the ink in the old bottle). Refill the cart with new ink, and things work well again!
So yes, the ink caused the problem...It's just weird that it just happened with Magenta bottle and not Cyan or Yellow or Black, although I bought them all at the same time.

Refill ink for Canon printers can also go bad. The bad ink can cause a sudden clogging in the print head taking out some or all nozzles for one colour. The problem might be caused by biological growth in the ink. Most reports are about magenta ink, but other colours have also gone bad. Hopefully the bad ink didn't damage the print head.

You don't need to use ethanol. I suggest distilled water instead, if you can get it. I don't know about Vietnam, but in many parts of the world, ethanol is usually sold with dissolved material that will be left behind as a residue.
