Here is a series of images, showing how I refill this type of cartridges.
Some information about HP 685 cartridge:
HP 685 colour: dye, normal size (sponge only), hold 5ml ink.
HP 685 black: pigmented, XL size (sponge + chamber), hold 14ml ink.
Note, there is no "HP 685 XL"!!
HP modifies HP 564 to make HP 685. They don't do as normal: normal size and XL size version, but instead they mix them to form the color carts is of normal size and the black is of XL size (to pr that one can print up to 550 page with it! And people will get blind and not looking at other carts. 
)
First, I cover the outlet with the original orange cap and tap the cart against a hard surface to correct the sponge position.
HP 685 color cart is of normal size: no ball-sealed hole. Refill is done by using the air vent hole.

Fill the syringle with 5ml of ink of correct color. Push the needle in the air vent all the way down (because the needle is short, only 1"), tilt it and inject ink *slowly*. When it's getting to the end, keep inject ink while pull up the needle.
After finish inject ink, let it sit for a while, then remove the orange cap and place it on top of the ink bottle (to collect the ink back!) Let it drip exceeded ink.
HP 685 black. You can see that there's ball-sealed hole, meaning it's XL version and it's chamber hold ink.
I don't use the ball hole. Instead, I drill a very small hold (~0.75mm, must be slightly bigger than the needle outer diameter. A little space is to let air out when ink comes in.) to inject the needle. Small hole can be sealed by hot glue easier and more perfect.
The hole I drilled using a screwdriver. Fill the syringle with 14ml of ink and inject 10ml of ink through this hole, tilt the cart and wait for 3 min for the sponge to absorb ink, then inject the rest 4ml.

How I tilt the cart.
After refill, warm up the hot glue stick and seal the hole. Use your wet finger to flatten it down!
Again, let it drip a little bit...Remember that you must seal the chamber refill hole before do this! Otherwise when you remove the orange cap ink will flow freely!
See? Sealed already!
Here's my cup of tea to relax while waiting...And, the tape I use to cover stuff...
Here's my working desk...
All sealed with the original orange caps, secured with rubber. Air vent is half-covered.
A full set of HP 685 refilled ink cartridges, wrapped in a plastic bag to minimize evaporation.
And finally, again, here is my refill toolkit. Refilled ink cartridges are stored upward. Syringles are pulled up a little bit so that it won't become sticky.
Done!
