It has been so long since I had to replace a cartridge that I've forgotten how to turn the ink monitor off...would appreciate help. Thanks.

Keep using it until when the printer sends a message asking you to press and hold a button on the printer. After you do that the ink level status for that cartridge will be turned off. You will need to reset the chip on the cartridge or use a new OEM cartridge for the ink level status to be turned back on again.

All of them! LOL
Why in the world would anyone want to turn it off? The carts for the 9000 are already easy to refill and reset with a readily available resetter.
So why?

Well, I needed to replace a cartridge and when you put in a new one, it automatically restarts the out of ink alert. Now...my son was in the middle of a big print job and clicked through the low on ink alarm...now it is fully out of ink. I press the orange light button (long press); turn the printer off with (including unplugging it) and turn it on with the error button pushed...no luck so far. I have gone for years without a chip resetter...just by telling the printer not to send the out of ink error...but I have forgotten how to turn the error message off. Thanks for your comments.

Please just get yourself a reseter for about $12 and your problems will be solved.
If you were to forget and run any of your canon carts empty, because you've turned off ink monitoring you will totally burn out your printer head!

The way to disable the ink monitoring on your printer is to hold in the resume button for 5 seconds when your get the out of ink notice
(Orange flashing) and then wait a moment and your printer will resume printing. (Foolish practice)

Its not as easy as that Joe from what the OP has said and what he's trying to achieve.

He uses new cartridges (Origin unknown) and is trying to completely empty them of every drop of ink before replacing them.
A resetter would be of no practical use because he is not refilling his cartridges, but a spare print head might..
