I have never had a problem by taping the vent because I have never taped the vent. I'm recommending NOT to tape the air vent--not ever for any reason.
If you cap the outlet port with the original orange cap held on with a rubber band and you have a better tape seal on the air vent, then when the ambient air pressure fluctuates, the air will go in and out through the outlet port and when it is on its way out, it can force ink out with it.
If, on the other hand, you do what I say, and leave the air vent open, all the air will go in and out through the air vent as it is designed to do. The serpentine path in the air vent is long enough and the extra wells in the path have enough volume that there will be no exchange of air between the inside and the outside of the cartridge.
