The first set of single color cartridge that I cleaned was a set of cli-521/pgi-520. The sponge in the large cartridge - pgi-520 - was still grey after flushing and I wanted it to be white, like the one in the cli-521. What I did was to add some window cleaning solution in the water. That didn't work, so I thought: why not foam?
I use this to clean cartridges through the filling hole:

If you keep the pump like this it will pump liquid into the cartridge, but if you turn it upside down it will pump air and, combined with the solution of water+window cleaning, it will turn into foam. That foam will clean everything! So 4-5 cycles of 5 sec solution + 1 sec air will turn that sponge from grey to almost white:

Maybe this method will clean that dangerous OEM yellow?

@The Hat : are you sure that dish-washing Fairy doesn't contain something that could clog the printhead? It contains something to keep your hands smooth...

I can also add another hugely unpopular suggestion to anyone who may have refilled their CLI-42 cartridge with ink and have it in current use; you need to stop using it now not later.

The next thing you need to do is to remove the print head and soak it in 2 cm of hand-hot water with fairy liquid in it and also pour some of it over the inlets where the cartridge usually sits.

I would leave it to soak overnight and after carefully drying it and installing it back into your printer to do the very same every week for a month, that maybe enough to get all of that dried yellow ink out from inside the print head and should ensure that it will perform as normal.

It may be totally unnecessary to do this with just one refill of the yellow but my print head failed overnight without warning, all be it I had refilled the cartridge three time on that print head before the disaster.

The fact that it was refilled successfully and used three times before causing problems is the cause for the intrigue. Each time you refilled, you shed more of the Canon ink like rinsing it off. Each time you refilled you also diluted the concentration of the Canon ink. Till boom....one of the two effects took place or combination. Did you try using any Ammonia based cleaner through the inlet at the top of the printer? That is where the blockage occurs and not at the nozzle.

This is how it went…

I started the day with a terrible nozzle check on just one colour; the yellow had a hole in the middle of it with several horizontal lines going in both directions, just like a sun rise, 80% missing.

I tried all the usual things to get it to improve but couldn’t, then soaked it in W5 and a drop of ammonia, (Heat dried overnight) that didn’t improve it either so I left it to settle down overnight.

When I turned on the printer again in the morning the cyan cartridge was not detected, I reset that then the magenta cart did the very same, followed by the photo black, then the three of them together got the same error. (Repeatedly)

I finally got them all reset and working again and managed to do just one nozzle check which was the same as the previous ones then the cyan cartridge started showing the same error, it was game over.

I had used this rouge yellow cartridge in my iX4000 before I transferred it over to the 4700, I am now thinking that this same cartridge may also be responsible for the damage to the print head in that machine, the nozzle check was about 95% perfect but I still went ahead and bought a new print head just in case they were discontinued (Not fitted yet).

I’m trying to see who can collect the most knackered print heads in such a short space of time, this all started back when I dared to fiddle with the Pro 1, the count is now up to four ! :hide

I would rather pull some cleaner through the printhead inlet, rather than push. I think pushing cleaner in would only make things worst if the clog is at the inlet.

Flushing, if you've removed the ball it is child's play. Stick a slip luer syringe into the refill ball hole. Dip into bowl of water and pump away. No jig required. Now presoak in windex or cascade solution first and the results will be better but MAKE SURE YOU GET ALL OUT both the intial yellow and the chemicals out. If you fill by the German method complete flushing could test your patience.

Connect an old syringe to a hose.....and you have turbo flush.

After purging thousands of carts using both techniques and now use a hybrid of both from the outlet and from the ink chamber I can reliably say that the ink chamber injection for some reason removes more ink quicker than by the outlet method. If you have access to both types then by all means do it but the trick to a good flush is either the temperature of water as well as the volume and velocity without overstressing the cartridge with pressure.

Given that if all someone has is a syringe and want to flush now, that will do the job as well.
