The Printer will feed the paper stock in on the short side.. ;)
Does it make a difference if the paper is feed into he printer perpendicular or parallel to the grain? Or is it how big the paper is that matters to the feed mechanism?

From what I can decipher of your post, having the grain parallel to the feeding of the paper, ie parallel to the short axis of the paper, which in your example is the cut in half A5 paper, would allow for heavier card stock in larger paper sizes.

If that is so then why not buy A5 paper with the grain parallel to the short axis of the paper?
