Hi - 1st post - what an amazing forum - lots of valuable knowledge here. I have a new canon MG5250 that has just flashed up low ink warnings on a couple of cartridges - after much reading i am a bit confused as to what to do. I want to obviously refill the cartridges with alternative cheaper than canon ink. However i understand this has its own problems as the new cartridges are not see thru. So - should i ;

1. Refill the original cartridges using ink in a syringe by the 'german method' as described in other posts.
2.Buy some 'other' replacement cartridges and refill them as required - i have seen these ones
- replace h**p with http

h**p://shop.ink.co.uk/shop/subcategory/catid/D-Canon/subcatid/Canon+PIXMA+MG5250/site/1/lng/en_EN?shopid=113b2f1a423995d780694b8d68fab901&visitid=&refid=

(i have used the company before and am happy with their products). They come ready filled and all you have to do is take the chips off the originals and slide them onto these replacements.

What else would i have to do if i got these cartridges and changed the chips over ie. stopping the printer recognising the low ink warnings etc??

Any advice welcome - thanks in advance....

Welcome.
The cartridges as you rightly say are opaque on your new printer can be easily got round
by buying a set of the 521s and putting the chip on them.

Not a cheap alternative but still a good one because now you'll have OEM cartridges that are the very best to refill.
See this thread for help with chip removal
http://www.nifty-stuff.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=6360

As there is no resetter for these chips at present (but I believe shortly there will) in the mean time
youll have to disable the ink monitoring on each cartridge as they show as empty to continue to print.

Next thing is to source good quality inks and all the necessary bits and pieces
youll need to successfully refill the cartridges, which ever method you choose, (The German method is fine).
As you are based in the UK I would suggest you give Octoinkjet.co.uk a try and see if they meet your approval for your supplies.

Starting up costs for refilling are not cheap but the savings and pleasure come later
in the knowledge of being able to print a much as you like and hang the costs. :)

If you check on some of the websites youll find them but the delivery charge will usually
bring the price back to that of the high street shops, so no win.. :(

There seem to be a fair few original cartridges on ebay ranging in price from 20 - 35 for a set - are these worth considering ....

If i was to get a set of 521's and was to take the chips off my original 526's how would i affix them onto the 521's as i would have had to have taken (ie cut off) the chips off the 521's therefore damaging the fixing posts for replacing the chips on....if you see what i mean. Also i went round a few supermarkets today to get an idea of prices there and they are just stupid. There was a huge box full of empty cartridges at sainsburys though that people had put there old cartridges in for recycling - i almost just lifted the lot and was going to put them in the boot to sort through at home - dont you just know there would be several 'useful' cartridges in there.....

The answer to the opaque cartridge is not a cheap one but you do get a set full of OEM inks.

On the first thread there was a link on how to get a chip off a cartridge and as you are putting
the chip back on an OEM cartridge the chip will slide back on easily and wont need any glue to hold it in place.

If I were you I would go back to that Sainsburys store and ask if you could rummage around in the box
of recycled cartridges and see if you can get at least a couple of the set you want if not all.

Take a latex glove with you and a printed list of the cartridges youll need just to be sure
you can get the complete set or more, just go it.. ;)

Thanks for the advice guys - i have found i can get a set of canon original 521 colours for 19.99 set of 3 and a black cart for another 8 so about 28 (delivered) - seems to be a good price - if i get these i then change the chips over from my 526's and use these until they need refilling....do i have to reset anything on the printer? - when do i start using these cartridges as my 526's arent empty yet? do i have to disable ink monitoring - if so how?
Sorry for all the questions - i just want to get it right first time.

Only use the 521s when your 526s are out of ink, get every drop out of them you can.

Once the cartridge shows empty replace it, as you wont be able to continue to print at this point.
Whip off the chip and put it on the corresponding colour 521 cartridge, then put it in the printer.

If you press and hold the resume button for 5 seconds the printer will restart.
You will have to do that on each and every cartridge as they become empty only once.

Please remember to check your new cartridges occasionally and refill them when showing say full for safety.
Happy printing and youll be an expert at refilling in no time at all... :)
