Gutenprint...The Poor Man's RIP

I've been trying to install gutenprint (wingp_5.2.6.2_PrintAll_ICM) in gimp (2.8.2) in win7-64 for a few days now.

Soberprinter wrote that the problems could have something to do with Wutenprint. Because its newer (2020), I tried Wutenprint (5.3.3.1) first. Cause after installation nothing happened (I think its only made for photoshop 32), no program was displayed, so it was undone via deinstalation and system recovery.

Then I trying to install gutenprint (wingp_5.2.6.2_PrintAll_ICM) in gimp (2.8.2). Gpspooler did not write any path lines when clicking (as administrator). Only when I inserted this into windows myself, gutenprint could be opened in Gimp.

If I want to print, another window opens (gpspooler), but without showing the picture. If I go to print, the print job is prepared in windows, but the printer does not respond and the print job is deleted again. Probably because no picture was loaded.

You can’t use 3rd party drivers with your Canon printers, the printer will just refuse to print..

Thanks for the answer. I would like to linearize and profile the printer via cmyk. Must the old canon driver be deleted, so that gutenprint can print ?

I reckon you missed the answer, Canon printers won’t work with third party drivers, So if gutenprint can’t integrate with the Canon driver then you’re going nowhere..

I think I really didn't get it. Why is my canon ip 4700 listed and selectable in gutenprint?

I don't have an ip4700, but can confirm that the Gutenprint driver works OK on my ip8750 (I'm using Fedora Linux so can't comment on how it works under Windows). I use Turboprint (a commercial driver), which produces higher quality output than gutenprint.

Turboprint/Printfab I have already, but I bought it three years ago in a version that couldn´t handle cmyk.

FYI to all: Gutenprint is a non-Windows app. It was ported over to Windows years ago. Did not see any updating for Windows 10 in my brief Google search. There could be conflicts with Windows 10 or different installation workarounds required such as running in Compatibility Mode.

That’s correct, the Gutenprint driver works in Linux, because there’s no Canon driver for that O/S.. You’ve got no chance in windows..
