If I refill new carts., or use compatibles do I then void the guaranty on a new Canon MG5150? Thanks

The Canon warranty states that the use of non OEM cartridges or ink will void warranty. But if the printer survives a few sets of refilled cartridges, you will have saved enough money to buy a new printer, if your printer fails.

Canon OEM cartridges refilled with a quality refill ink are unlikely to damage your printer. Compatible cartridges should not be refilled, as they might cause ink starvation, which could burn out the printhead.

I refill my BCI-3/6, PGI-5/CLI-8 and PGI-520/CLI-521 OEM cartridges using the "German Method" of refill and Image Specialists Ink from http://www.octoink.co.uk/ .

So long as you dont disable the ink monitoring on your printer then your guarantee is safe.
It doesnt matter what you do with your cartridges or which ones you choose to use..

I doubt Canon would fuss if you had one or two disabled cartridge monitors since it is entirely plausible for a user to do that in order to finish a print job. However, if the problem is related to ink starvation, such as from a cartridge that was run dry yet overridden and used to attempt printing, then Canon could deny warranty service. Typically, a warranty print head replacement does not require the printer sent back to the company where they would examine the EEPROM, just performing maneuvers to satisfy tech support of the probable issue.

One other issue, if you have converted a printer to print on CD/DVD's in the USA then Canon could deny warranty service even if the issue is completely unrelated.

Canon does not enforce it very strictly. I have heard a story somewhere on the web that someone brought his printer to a Canon authorized service center. Not only they replaced his print head under warranty they also tossed out the compatibles in that printer and put in a set of new OEM carts for free. Don't count on the story. It wasn't my own experience. But Canon is known to be very good in customer service. I won't worry too much about the warranty because of using compatibles. You do want to keep a set of OEM carts in case you need to send to printer in. They most likely will send you a refurbished replacement and ask you to send yours in. They will pay shipping for you too.

That comment about saving enough money to buy another printer is the key for me. I have an Epson but figure I have saved enough money on inks ( OEM VS third party) to pay for dozens ( at least) of brand new printers. The OEM inks are simply priced so high that it is ridiculous as far as I am concerned. I often read articles that make statements about how much better OEM inks are and how third party inks can destroy a printer etc and etc but all I can say is that from the first time I used a CIS system with third party inks to right now I have been very satisfied with the results and in many case have felt the resulting prints have not only matched OEM inks but have actually been better at times! If anyone insists that OEM inks and their prices are worth it and/or better, well God bless them but for me I'm, very happy with the results I get and the substantial amount of money I'm saving!
