German "Durchstich" refill method for the PGI-520/CLI-521 cartridges

Squeeze bottles use Luer Lok needles (twist until tight). Octoink has nice assortment here:

Needles with scabbards (airtight needle caps) come with their bottle kits. You can specify 2" or 1.5" length needles. You need 2" needles for Durchstich fill method.
Otherwise 1.5" will be just fine.

Not necessary to clean needles after filling cartridge. Just replace the cap(scabbard) on the needle. Will then be ready for next use. Regards

Hi guys!
I wanted to ask you something. I wanted to refill my OEM carts, and as I had no black cart (the small one), I just washed a blue one, and injected black ink in it.
But I think there must have been some blue ink left, as now when I print, all my pics have a blue/green tint!
Finally, I bought a new OEM black ink tank, but the problem is still there, even after a number of printed pictures.
Do you think I have to print many black pages to clean the print head, or should I use alcohol or something to clean the print head?

You need to tell us what printer or type of cartridges you use.
You can not swap cartridges in later model Canon printers.
Info on this forum indicates the chips are different for each
cartridge type. So black ink must be used in a Canon black
cartridge. And the black cartridge must be install in its designated
position on the print head.

Hi. I am using a MP540 and Image Specialists inks, but I took the chip from a non-oem black cartridge, and installed it on a oem blue cartridge. The cart was washed thoroughly, but it seems there was some blue ink left.

Just to note I have a growing collection of used OEM canon carts PGI-5 and CLI-8's if anyone wants some for a small donation to the Red Cross and the cost of postage.

Note: I haven't flushed them so you will need to handle that yourself...

OK... now things are going pretty bad for me
I bought a new black dye oem cart, and while printing a black sheet seems ok and dark black, when I print a grey chart, all the grey shades seem to have a greenish tint!
Do you think there is a problem with the printhead?

Ok! After loooong testing, I came to the conclusion that the magenta ink tank has a problem. Not sure what's going on, but when I put the carts in my old printer (IP3000), everything works fine with the cyan and the yellow, but when I put the magenta tank in the printer, I get the same problem as on my MP540! That's cool, as is probably mean my printhead is ok, right?
Now, all my ink tanks are original Canon ones...but the magenta tank was kind of dried out. Is there something to do to re-establish the ink flow, or am I condemned buying a new magenta ink tank?

Photofan: Just rinse out the magenta tank if you refill from top. Let warm water run thru fill hole on top for five minutes. If you use Durchstich fill method, then purge thru ink outlet port on bottom. You can find photos of hose apparatus for this purpose here in the forum. Otherwise replace cartridge with new OEM. Read the forum for a wealth of information. Especially "Refilling Inkjets" section. Search terms like "purge", "flush", "Rinse", "cleaning", "refilling", "refill", "squeeze bottles", "syringe", "needles", "Durchstich". View contributions by pharmacist, websnail, ghwellsjr, stratman, mikling and many other professors this forum. These guys are smart and know what they are talking about. Being color-blind, your grey chart looks perfectly fine to me.

You don't need any hoses to clean a dye ink cartridge, just turn it upside down in hot flowing water from the tap until the sponge is saturated. Then turn it over and blow in the air vent until no more water comes out. Repeat several times until the sponge is pure white. Then let it sit in a warm spot for many days until the outlet port is dry when you blot it with a paper towel or tissue.

You should put another cartridge in the print head and do a cleaning because you don't want the ink in the print head to dry out during this long process.
