Your local printer repair guy is totally wrong. The sponges under the printhead parking area are purge pads. Their purpose is to distribute vacuum evenly under the printhead nozzles to make sure all nozzles are cleaned.

The ink absorber pads are pads of a felt like material. they are placed at the bottom of the printer enclosure. Their purpose is to contain the ink pumped from the printheads for nozzle cleaning. They of course have a limited capacity, and to avoid ink overflow the printer firmware estimates when the pads are nearly full and gives a warning and when the pads are estimated to be full the printer is locked.

There are no ink level sensors for the absorber pads. The remaining absorber capacity is estimated/calculated by counting number of nozzle cleaning both automated and ordered by the user.

To unlock the printer you need a special software tool, which can be found at E-bay. For older Canon printers some say you can get away with resetting the counter without replacing or washing the absorbers just once. Others say you risk a nasty ink spill when the ink absorbers overflow. If you try this then do so at your own risk. It is recommended to place the printer on some tray to catch a possible ink overflow.

Don’t waste your money on that $25 print head because it’s refurbished and it won’t work, the ink counter needs to be reset with a service tool, there no other way of getting the printer to work otherwise.Do you think that those awfully expensive Maxify megatanks suffer also from that kind of problems ?. They're supposed to be high duty office machines, not run.of.the.mill home units.'
That I wouldn’t know, but I suspect they put more into the making of the Maxify, only because it’s for Offices.. Home users can go to hell..
they have print heads for this only $25.00 . My real problme now is that ink counter. seems like I need to get in touch with Canon.

local ( 45 minute drive away to dreaded Orlando) printer repair guy here said that the ink sponge is located below the print head park area and its just a sensor.

NO counter to reset or anything. Man I wish he is right. Sound right to you all?
No it’s not a sensor, and save your trip because that service guy is talking rubbish and not worth the visit..

madmachinist! Have you thrown away your printer yet? Please hang onto if you can. There should be a way to reset the waste ink counter on the actual printer itself, using the printer buttons. Here is a video about it.

The instructions showcased in that video do not work on the G6020, but I have figured out how to put it into service mode. Starting from the powered-off state, hold the color button and then press and hold the power button. Let go of the color button and hit stop five times. Then finally let go of the power button. This puts the printer into service mode.

I have not been able to get anything to happen once it's in service mode, but if you're planning on throwing out the printer maybe you can play around with it in that mode and see if you can figure anything out?

I have the G6020 too, and I re-routed the waste ink lines myself into some mason jars (so the ink absorber will never actually get full). I'm planning on making a post about that when I can. In the mean time, I've only figured out how to enter service mode in terms of resetting the counter, but it should be possible in service mode to reset it.

If you try putting it in service mode and playing around with it let me know what you find!

Otherwise, the folks over here might be willing to buy the model off you--I know they're looking to get one.

Reseting directly the counter while on service mode was possible on older Canon printers of years ago (i.e. my Pixma Pro-9000 and Pixma IP4000). Unfortunately, Canon took the necessary steps to disable this sort of easy 'hacking' by the users. Nowadays, the only way to reset the counters on most (but not all) Canon models is to use the right version of the software tool.

Epson, Canon, HP... A "few"
Resurrecting this thread with a G6050 which I'm intending to document the process for fitting an external waste ink tank to and the reset process too if I can.

Has anyone come any closer to figuring out how to reset these and which (if any) software version/tool is compatible?

Any help, semi-masochistic volunteers, etc... ? :fl
