If you get a situation where the carts work and then ink starvation comes about, you check there is ink in the reservoir but as soon as you remove the refill plug a ton of ink gets pulled into the sponge, you likely are experiencing a situation where the cartridge is choking itself and ink starvation is the result.

I was only on my 2nd refilling of your cartridges and was experiencing red ink starvation. I thought I had refilled it incorrectly and was going to have to go through the purge procedure. I used the paperclip trick and the cartridge is printing fine again.
