I have noticed since my Pro 1 had it’s firmware up-graded, that there are no real improvements
that I can see for the print owner, except on the dark side there are a few which involve the
ink monitoring, ink wastage, sorry (Cleaning) and new pop-ups.

I’ve run the printer for more than twelve months with no ink monitoring and have gotten use to
the higher than normal purging/cleaning cycles and that is to be expected. :hu

Since the new upgrade I have used the printer for a further 3 months without ink monitoring enabled
and the cleaning cycles have gone up considerably.( No Sh*t Sherlock)

But now I am using proper chips and the ink monitoring has been restored once again back to normal
but the clean cycles have stayed much the same (Excessive) in my opinion and the only notable
change to the printer is this darn firmware upgrade.

So if you guys get an offer to upgrade your firmware for whatever reason DON’T do it,
because it’s a bet it will also contain this new improved (Waste ink) feature.. :somad

Have you looked at a service manual to compare the scheduled maintenance cleanings with what you are experiencing?

The Service Manual is totally useless since the upgrade; nor can I enter Service Mode. :hide
Out with the old and in with new code..:smack

Why do printer manufacturers do this? Well, on aging print heads get clogged more often so more and deeper cleaning cycles are advisible.

Users who don't like that should take the next precautions:

-Always use the CD-rom that came with the printer to install the driver. Don't use newer drivers from the net.
-On installing, untick the box for auto updates.
-Make a firmware dump. Maybe this is for geeks only, because not everyone knows how to restore the data.

Don' let the printer manufacturer get under your skin. :smack

The funny thing is I’ve never heard of them doing anything like that before,
but then again Canon always does what's good for Canon ! :th

I expect there will be one for the Pro100 soon, after all the low price models in the USA have been sold.

There was a problem reported earlier with the Pro 100, where some of them were shipped
with a newer firmware that was causing some trouble, so let the buyer beware..
That’s why it’s important not to get caught out by the, :ep
O’ it will improve your overall colour printing enjoyment greatly or some such rubbish.

But wait because we’ll also throw in our new little sub-routine for in wasting your ink
and we won't mention that in our press release either because it's free..:rant

At this point you're better off disconnecting from the internet before installing. If you can see a manufactured date on the packaging and it looks pretty new, you may want to dig around online and find older drivers for it. You need to do this to use the "break the length limit" hack for the 1400, for instance.

Eventually it will get to the point where we'll need to find a cheap used netbook or something so the printers never go online.

It’s not the print driver that’s the big problem here; it’s the printer’s firmware when it’s upgraded !
You usually have to download it and then install it willingly yourself..:barnie
