Error: D:\ is not accessible. Incorrect function

Hello,

The following is my laptop spec:

Technology TL-60
1.99Ghz, 1.87BG of Ram,
Physical Address Extension
Matshita DVD-Ram UJ-860H

Windows XP Professional
Version 2002
Service Pack 3

Now, whenever I insert a cd on my Matshita DVD-Ram UJ-860H, it shows this error message:
"D is not accessible. Incorrect function".
I experience the same whenever I insert a blank dvd rw.
However, if the dvd rw is not blank then I am able to see the contents of the dvd rw disc without getting this error.
What is wrong ?

On my Windows Registry, I have 24 instances of this:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
and on more than one of then the "Upper Filter" exists therefore I am unable to decide which one's "Upper" I should delete to see if the problem gets fixed or not.
I have seen on many forums others experiencing the same and getting advised to uninstall Roxio but I don't think I have it or the Nero because I can't find them on my Start-> All Programs.
And, I don't think that, me not having a cd burner software is the problem because like I mentioned before, I am able to see the contents of a dvd disc inserted on my dvd drive providing the disc is not empty.

I have seen the following solution mentioned on the internet:
"Got to the Drive letter in Windows Explorer
and right clicking on it. Go to Properties; Click on Recording; Check "Enable CD recording on this drive".
But the problem is, I can see only this much on my WinXp SP3:
Windows Explorer-> DVD-Ram'
and after right clicking on it -> Properties; but there is no "recording" tab.
Therefore, I cannot check the "Enable CD recording on this drive" option.

I am really stuck now ! Can some techie specialist help ?

I dont know what a DVD error is doing on an ink forum, but as you are here we give it ago.
I would hate you to think that we're not friendly here.
I had a talk to my younger Son about your problem and he came up with some solutions for you to try.

To enable CD recording in Windows XP, the IMAPI CD Burning Service needs to be enabled.

To enable it, follow these steps:

1. Go to Start -> Control Panel -> Adminstrative Tools -> Services (if the Control Panel uses Windows XP Category layout (and has a blue background), single left click on Performance and Maintenance, then click on Administrative Tools, and then double click on Services)

2. Look for IMAPI CD Burning COM Service in the list of services (they are in alphabetical order).

3. Double click IMAPI CD Burning COM Service in the list.

4. Roughly in the middle of the window that appears, look for Startup Type.

5. Click the arrow to right of this option; change the option to Automatic.

6. Just below this, there are four buttons:


Start
Stop
Pause
Resume

7. Of these four buttons, click the Start button.

8. Note that you may have to log off and then log on for this change to take effect.

9. You should now be able to view and write files to CDs using Windows.

As for the Windows Registry. I would NOT recommend editing anything in the Windows registry. Unless Microsoft or another reputable source can confirm that those registry entries are the cause of the problem and that editing them will fix it.

Editing the Windows Registry needs detailed knowledge of how it works and what the function of each registry entry is, in addition, you need to know whether such a registry entry needs to be changed in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE hive or the HKEY_CURRENT_USER hive or both (there are also more hives than these two). Editing the Windows Registry is a task to be done with extreme care.

Finally you should always backup the Windows Registry before making any changes to it. Here is an article that explains how to do this:

For your information, from the specification of the laptop you provided, here is some more detailed info about it:

CPU (Processor): AMD Turion X2 (i.e. dual core) TL-60, 2 Ghz clock speed, 512 KB L2-Cache per core

Memory (RAM): 2 GB (it is shown as 1.87 GB since the integrated video card is using 128 MB).

Physical Address Extension means that your processor supports 36 bit RAM addressing rather than 32 bit RAM addressing. This means that if you were using a 64 bit operating system (a newer version of Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7), the processor could make use of more than 4 GB of RAM. 32 bit operating systems are limited to 4 GB (at most).

Thank you for your advice. I followed your steps but the problem remains.
It still doesn't access the drive when I insert a blank dvd rw disc.
Nor can I copy and paste any file onto the cd drive.
before following your steps, the drive was showing-up as dvd-ram (label) but now as cd drive.

Looking on the web today it would seem that there is a big problem with that DVD drive.So your problem is solely with the Matshita DVD-Ram UJ-860H and not your laptop or your software. I think we gave it a good shot and it didnt work so the only thing you can do is hope the manufacturer of your laptop puts out a patch that will cure the problem. Sorry we cant help any further.. :|

On MY Computers, it is showing up as:
CD Drive (D.
Now, if I right click this and click "properties" then it shows-up as:
Matshita DVD-Ram UJ-860H.

I tried copying a file from my C: drive onto it but the same error message. I think I was able to copy files from my C: drive to this cd/dvd drive before. I also can't find any cd/dvd burner softwares on my laptop. I think I uninstalled everyone I had a few weeks back for some reason. I'll try installing these burners now and see how things go. Now, which FREE burner do you recommend ? It must write to cd-r and dvd+rw discs.

Since your drive can read CDs/DVDs but not write to them it appears that your driver is wrong/corrupted.
Try this - Go to Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager - expand the listing + sign for DVD/CD-ROM drives. Does your unit show there? If so select Properties and maybe try updating the driver or uninstall the driver. If uninstalling - turn off your laptop and reboot - see if it finds new hardware and asks to install a driver. You might need a disk that came with your laptop for the driver. Let me know what happens if you try this.

I tried that many times even now and Windows says it can't find any driver more newer than the one I already have.

As far as the drive showing up as a CD Drive, that's just a Windows quirk, it does not mean your drive is no longer recognised as a DVD drive. As far as the driver for your burner, there are no specific drivers for it, they just use drivers supplied in Windows. I would suggest posting your problem at http://club.myce.com/. There are alot of people there with a great deal of knowlege on this subject.

Do you have a power cord plug in ? Some laptop require that when you want to use cd/dvd drive, just curious. I suggest you should go to Tomshardware or other relate forum to get help quicker for computer's stuff.
Imgburn is the best free burner program in my opinion. I get rid of Roxio or Nero out of all my computer long time ago.
