2007 is about 10 year ago, and lots of articles from those days may not be accurate anymore with the newer printer models. The WF7xxx cartridges come with a window at the bottom to a prisma so that the firmware can actually check whether the cartridge is empty or not which as one of those details is not mentioned because such type of cartridges were not marketed by Epson, only Canon was doing it like that since a long time. And it is correct that Epson is counting the pages and updates this as status data in the firmware but the page count is not used in connection with the cartridge ink levels - just run a test - just print as many cyan pages as you can - or print whatever other black text in B/W mode and watch the cyan level, printing cyan pages will lower the ink level much much faster. You are right that 3rd party cartridges with ARC chips are the recommended type for refill if you don't look for a CISS with tubes.
