As far as I know it is the printer driver that determines all this, not the firmware of the printer. The people at Printfab do custom printer drivers. The hard part is optimizing the algorithms that determine when the extra colors should be used. I have been dreaming of converting an 8-channel Epson into a CMYkKRGB monster for far too long!
