Epson P600 Warning Message. Am in trouble?

hello print masters,

This is my first interaction in this forum. i just started the process of home printing. i recently got Epson P600 and started using Precision Color refillable inks (which are great). So, i noticed that Im getting these error/warning messages in the printer which is normal since Im using PC cartridges (pictures 1,2,3). However, I got a warning message in my laptop indicating that im using non-original ink and cartridges (picture 4) when I reset the cartridge by removing and reinserting it back when the ink levels indicates empty. the thing which scares me is that each time i do this, the warning message records the new type of ink being replace. I am afraid that when i replace all the ink colors it will lock me from using the 3rd party cartridges similarly to the P800 issue.

is this normal? does anyone who uses this printer got this warning message in their laptop ? how to overcome this issue?

Hi @khalidinho and welcome, these messages are designed to scare the hell out of you, and obviously, it’s working, but I reckon you should disregard them and carry on using 3rd party inks and cartridges.

I am afraid that when i replace all the ink colors it will lock me from using the 3rd party cartridges similarly to the P800 issue.

That warning applies to the P800 model only and not to your P600, so that won’t happen, your new inks are not harmful to your P600, despite these stupid warning notices...

Epson will tell you frequently from now on that you are not using their inks. Please make sure that you have any automatic firmware updates disabled in the driver, there are some secret settings, or Epson may throw out your 3rd party cartridges in the future, not now but whenever in a year or...

thanks @Ink stained Fingers for your reply. i received the printer a month a go and naively i updated the driver and printer firmware. however, i did discover that you must turn auto-firmware update off which i did.

I am afraid that the update i did may cause me some issues in the future. but how can Epson as you mentioned "throw out your 3rd party cartridges in the future" how can they do that? can they disable these particular cartridges? if so, what will happen if i bought a new set from PC or any other supplier, can they redo and disable any new cartridges?

i hope everything goes well. i did an update for the printer firmware and driver when i first got the printer naively. now i disabled the auto-firmware update. i hope nothing well result from updating my firmware to the latest two weeks ago.

with older printers like the R265 you could display some information about your cartridges including a production date code. Just imagine that the firmware would block datecodes older 2 or so years than the datecode of the firmware, and with every firmware update you have a moving time window throwing out older datecodes. I'm not saying that's the actual way Epson is doing it but a possible way explaining lots of effects with 3rd party cartridges people report suddenly being blocked but not from the beginning of their use. Cartridges for refill or with CISS systems don't get an subsequent update of a prodution date code to counteract that so just keep the firmware update off - unless you actually have a critical functional problem related to firmware which gets fixed that way, but that is pretty rare, I have seen that once in 15 years on an old Pro 7600, but at that time I had to do the update manually. But this is not related to the warnings that you are using 3rd party cartridges, that will not go away. Some time ago some HP cartridges were reported as well being actively date coded and older ones blocked.

The non-genuine warning whenever you print comes from Epson Status Monitor 3. I think you can disable it if you are printing over USB, but that option is not available if you're printing over the network for some reason.

You can go into the directory Windows\System32\spool\drivers\x64\3 (if you're using 64-bit Windows), then rename or otherwise block access to "E_32ARN1GE.EXE". This will disable ink monitoring from the PC as well, so you'll need to use the LCD or the app to keep an eye on it.

Those messages are par for the course today by Epson. Now if you were to use a resetter on the OEM then that would not pop up but as discussed before, not worth the effort at all.
This aspect of knowing non genuine is a bigger signal than one realizes. It is entirely possible to make their warnings come true. How????? It is possible that one day, when the printer sees a non genuine cartridge it will switch to a different backup firmware which throttles the printer back, this could be in speed, resolution etc...to the point where it is indeed true that if non oem is detected, it no longer prints the same. Not yet, but in the back of my mind I see its potential. It would be entirely legal as I see it.

Also recall when reset OEM chips on the CLI-8 are detected as non Canon by Canon software. They disallowed the use of some of Canon services if this was the case. Thus a precedent as to what is possible should be noted....so we have some future surprises in store down the road with the newer printers. Only time will tell what they actually implement.
