just when i thought I'd get a Canon the lure of the Epsons has grabbed me, particularly the 1400, which can now be gotten new for under $200. Hobbicolors doesn't make carts for Epsons. I see a bunch of alternatives on ebay but want to pick a vendor with good inks. Don't want to crap out a new printer.

Any recommendations?

I'd recommend looking at inks separate from the cartridges/kits if I were it tends to make the job somewhat trickier if you look to get both at the same time.

Tackling ink first, the usual suspects are Image Specialists, Hobbicolors and possibly one or two others but there's a plethora of information on those so some research time on here should prove dividends.

As for cartridges or CIS's... Not much help there as I don't know of particularly good or bad refillable carts... In the main your key important feature is the Auto reset chips on the carts. These need to be capable of handling all firmware releases and not just the first batch of 1400's. CIS wise I'd always recommend Rihac for support and documentation as much as anything else, but again looking around will help there.

Probably not the "Get X" you were looking for but then I might be considered a teensy bit biased as I sell inks myself.. Hopefully it's enough to get you started though... :)

For my epson R285 (carts T0801-T0806, same as for 1400) I have bought refillables from ebay shop "cube1113".
The item (ebay Nr 350323454309) is good. Refilling is easy (with others in the past there were problems with the first filling and vacuum), ink flow and ACR works well.
By now the item has changed (as you can see: ebay Nr 350358704037) - hopefully these are as good as mine...

The Epson 1400 is very good photo printer. It is even better in printing quality than my previous Canon i9950 printer, but the amount of waste ink deposed by the printer is really shocking. I now have my Epson 1400 used for only a few weeks and after installing a CISS with pigment ink, the waste ink bottle of my Epson 1400 is almost half full now. It is really shocking to see how much ink is wasted by this printer.

Have a look at my youtube-movie I uploaded this afternoon:

And watch particular at the ink waste bottle.

I always had great results with Precision Colors (Image Specialists) ink bought from Mikling, a member of this forum, on both my Epson and Canon printers. Plus, I am now using his prefilled cartridges for my Artisan 800 and they are very good so far. No ink flow problems at all! I know he sells some for the 1400, so you might want to consider buying from him.
