I bought this printer a while ago but gave up on it as the ink was super expensive and CIS was too messy. finally found some non OEM cartridges on Ebay, but i can't get the printer to recognize them. It just keeps saying to replace them when i do it says they're incompatible. The ink light is on and the green power light is flashing. Anyone ever run into this?

I have. But I can't say for sure what was happening since that was three years ago. Additionally, 3rd party chip technology, as well as Epson's "non-OEM cartridge deterrent" technology have changed.

When I first made the transition from Epson OEM to refillables, I had some trouble similar to what you described. I don't recall however, if this occurred when I first made the changeover or when I re-filled the third party cartridges. In any case, I pulled all six of the 3rd party cartridges, then re-installed the OEMs, then printed a page or two. Then I removed the OEMs & re- installed the 3rd party. Voila, they were recognized.

But as mentioned - technology has changed. The older chips didn't auto reset so I'm guessing this procedure was manually resetting the 3rd party cartridge chips.

The other possibility is that for some reason the chips in your 3rd party cartridges aren't compatible with your 1400. You never said exactly what you were doing when this happened, nor what 3rd party brand you have, so I am doing some guessing. However, since you bought them on Ebay, I'm guessing this could be the problem. I suggest you seek recourse from the dealer that sold them to you. Perhaps there are tricks required to reset/recognize their cartridges.

Interesting that you found your CIS "too messy". I feel that way about re-fillables. Once installed, my CIS ran 3 years mess free except for the rare occasions when I refilled the bulk ink tanks.

I ordered some refillable cartridges for my Epson 1400 in the UK at Coralgraph.com (ebay shop as well) and find them pretty good: no need to vacuum fill them to get good results. I am quite impressed by them and are not expensive at all.
