I have an Epson 1280 using a CFS from inksupply.com. The black head wasn't printing so I purchased a kit from "fixyourownprinter" that uses a solvent on the ink sponge. This didn't work. It looks like there must be foam in the black head.

Anyway now the red light is continuously on. Is there a way to reset this?

thanks in advance,

John

Red "maintenance" light on continuously means either:
1. Cartridge Fault - Ink out in one or other cartridge.
2. Cartridge Fault - Ink cartridge not recognised.
3. Cartridge Fault - Bad electrical contact with cartridge chip (so printer incorrectly thinks #1 or #2).
4. Printer Fault - Major circuit board fault (so printer incorrectly thinks #1 or #2).

Most likely cause (in my opinion) is #3 due to contamination while using your cleaning kits. Try lightly cleaning the contacts on the carts with a pencil eraser.

Next guess - One of your Auto Reset Chips has failed - You are using ARCs with your CFS, aren't you?

Note - Fixing the red light won't automatically fix your black printing problem. It is very likely a separate issue.

{Edit} Inksupply.com discusses both your problems in some detail at ... http://www.inksupply.com/instructions/cfs_1270_orig.pdf ... see the "Most Common Problem" and "Ink Foam Accumulation" sections at the end of the document.

Thanks for the advice. I'll try number 3. Is there a chance that the contacts for the chips on the printer need cleaning also?

Yes, I'm using Auto Reset Chips, at least I believe that's what the manufacture calls them. Basically, if my printer starts blinking red (low on ink) I turn the unit off, wait a few seconds, turn it back on and the printer thinks new cartridges have been inserted.

There's a method for removing foam from a cartridge that I'm going to attempt if I can solve the red light problem.

Is there any way to diagnose the printer for a Major circuit board fault?

thanks for your help!
