Edible printer question

What should I consider: edible ink cartridges or edible ink refills?

I wouldn't do it. Bacteria might grow inside a printer used with edible inks. See this thread.

The problem is most edible inks are not properly formulated. Adding enough propylene glycol and preservatives like methylparabene/propylparabene stops the formation of bacterial growth. These products are harmless and used as preservatives in cough syrups, creams and lotions.

One could use the following formula as base for edible inks:

15 grams of propylene glycol
1 gram of "Solutio Parabeni Concentrata" (18 parts methylparabene, 2 parts propylparaben, 80 parts of propylene glycol)
5 gram of potable alcohol (ethanol)
(boiled and cooled downed) destilled water up to 100 gram

Dissolve your food-safe dyes in this solution and your ink is ready. The ink is heavily preserved and bugs won't grow easily in this medium.

A good idea to interest my wife in the refill hobby

IMO Canon PGI-9 carts are easy to clean and reuse for edible ink.

What kind of dyes can be used and were can they be found ?
(too late to gather berries in the wood)
