Hello,
I have a 5year old Canon Pixma E510.
I use this printer just for home prints occasionally (10ish pages weekly). My current ink cartridge has around 20% ink left and since this is a old model there are no OEM replacement cartridges available anymore.
I am used to refill the colour cartridge as its rarely used with Dye based inks. Previously I refilled the black cartridge (pigment) with dye based ink but in turn managed to damage the print head, I later learned that Dye and Pigment based inks can't be mixed.

So I just wanted to know that if Pigment Ink can be used beyond expiry date. The one I bought will expire on 09/2022 and I won't be able to use it by then and it will take me atleast a year and a half beyond expiry to use it.
Also can't spend the extra on a new printer now as they are grossly overpriced because of the chip shortage and pandemic.

You will have no issues with that cart and ink and just ignore the expiry dates, and you can go to refill it when it becomes empty too..;)

Some HP printers refuse to print if a cartridge has expired. I have never heard of a Canon printer doing this, so I think the only thing that will expire is the warranty. The cartridge will most likely be useable for years to come.

I have an old HP printer, a DJ930. It prints perfectly with New Old Stock cartridges that expired in 2014.

I'm using without issues Canon pigment ink extracted from large format carts that expired in 2012-2014.

Thanks for the quick answers.
The issue I previously faced with Dye based refills were that the Printhead always got damaged after a month or so after refilling, so thought that will give the pigment ink a try this time as cartridge is originally pigment based and someone said that mixing the ink types will damage the print heads.
Good to know that this ink will last me for atleast 2+years post BB date or until the prices come down and I can invest in a new Canon Printer.

I recently refilled my Maxify in despair with large format BK ink expired in 2009 .
The black nozzles were clogging more and more (using 3th party ink) and the GI-56 bottles were sold out.
I was fearing for the printhead.
After a few cleaning cycles the nozzle check was perfect again !
As @The Hat already mentioned, good quality ink cleans a head better than you can.

One more thing. Are different Canon Inkjet Pigment bottles the same quality of ink?
I am talking about Gi-790 and Gi-71 PGBK Pigment Inks. Both are pigment and both are 135ml bottles with different nozzles/spouts.
The Gi-790 has a male spout and the Gi-71 had a female spout.
