I had tried all the cleaning methods and they didn't work on my IP 5200, so I bought a new printhead. All went well for about 30 copies and then greyscale printing resulted in red lines. I did a check and the cyan was gone again. I had cleaned the pads with windex before installing the new head. Not sure what is going on. My test prints always have shown the black CL8 bar to be grey, but that didn't seem to affect my printing. Anyone got any idea what is going on.

Epson, Canon, HP... A "few"
My guess would be the cartridge and/or ink...

Easiest way to tell if it's either is to get an OEM cartridge and try using that... If after a couple of cleans and some purged printing it works then you can dismiss any printhead problems...

From there, getting a fresh cyan cartridge, purging it and then filling it with your ink will tell if the ink is the problem...

There's a number of resources on here on how to purge/clean cartridges so hopefully one of those will prove useful.

Check the ink and ink cartridges you use. Don't tamper the purge unit. You may be able to recover your new print head still.

Did you recently start refilling? If so what brand ink? Some are less compatible with Canon than others.

I have been using refilled cartridges that I get from LaserMonks.com. They seemed to work well for quite a while, but I will be getting genuine Canon carts. as soon as I get near a store that sells them. I'll put them in and hope for the best. Anyone else had a problem with LaserMonks carts?

Well, I got the Canon ink and put in new Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow. Still no Cyan prints. Clean did no good. Deep clean resulted in a streaked dark cyan band and very streaked light (very). Repeated clean test clean test test deep clean test etc. cycles resulted in the fact that clean always did nothing. Deep clean could result in a solid dark cyan band, but light cyan was always streaked to different levels. Eventually deep clean produced a streaked dark cyan and I gave up. Anybody know what to do next?

The first thing you should do when you have these kinds of problems is to check your purge system. Open the cover and wait until the print head stops. Take a flashlight and look off to the right where the print head parks for two black pads. The square one for your color dye inks is easy to see. The rectangular one to its left is more difficult to see but you are not concerned about that one anyway. Take a syringe or an eye dropper or a pinched straw and put some Windex or other window cleaner or just plain water on the square pad to the right. Verify that the liquid remains on the pad for ten or fifteen seconds. It will look shiny from the liquid. Close the cover of the printer and turn the printer off and back on. Do a nozzle check. Now open the cover and look at the pad to see if the liquid has been sucked away. It should look dull and coarse and not shiny like it did before. Post your result for further instruction.

I don't understand how the purge system would only be bad on the Cyan cart - it's the same pad for all the colours?

I had a IP5200 that wouldn't give a good nozzle check or respond to any amount of cleaning carts and purges.
I replaced the printhead with a new one and the same problem immediately repeated.
My assumption was that the problem was not in the printhead but in the printer:in time I landfilled the lot.

I currently use an ip6000 which has consistent mediocre nozzle checks for two years and never responded to cleaning or purging - but I have no intention in investing in a new printhead to find out where the problem lies - once bitten etc.

Yes, it is the same pad for all the dye ink colors. I'm not saying that the problem is the purge system. I'm saying that it may be the purge system and you need to find out before attempting any other fixes.

The way I see it is that if the other colours are working - the purge system is working - we tell people to put liquid on the pad and see if it sucks, then we say the purge system is good, so the problem lies elsewhere..and replacing the head and the carts is going beyond heroic.

I hate being the bad cop.
