Creality CR-10 - First Thoughts & Prints

My CR-10 arrived yesterday!! Here are a few things I noticed:

1) Wow, it was pretty easy to put together. Even easier than I expected!
2) The fan-body is a HUGE BRICK! I can't barely see anything under the bloody thing it's so huge and square. With my MP Select Mini I can totally see under it and can even get at boogers, strings, etc. with tweezers... not a chance with this thing. It's probably my biggest pet-peeve right now.
3) It's definitely louder (especially the control box) than my MP Select Mini
4) The menu isn't as easy / intuitive as the MPSM, but definitely has more options
5) The cable management isn't as clean as I'd expect it should be. In my first home test, one of the cables got between the bed and the main bar and so it couldn't hit the z-limit-switch, so it just kept spinning!
6) The PLA filament that came with the printer is WAY different from the TIANSE White PLA I've been using with my MPSM. The CR-10 filament seems way more... I dunno... like nylon? Hard to explain, but yes, VERY different... which really surprised me. I wouldn't think various PLA's would be so totally different!
7) I'm having a much harder time getting stuff to stick to this bed than I did with my MPSM. Not sure if it's the filament, bed plate material, leveling, or something else. In fact, I just looked and my print completely came loose while I was typing this....

All said, I'm still thinking this will be a good printer once I dial it in... but I'm not sure it's going to replace my MPSM for most of my daily / smaller jobs.

My first print was too long for my MP Select Mini, and my 2nd print was too tall for my MP Select mini (it's about 170mm tall and the mini maxes out at 120mm):

Well congratulations @Nifty, you sure got a big beast this time, and like you I am still using the MS mini to print spare parts for the CD 10, but when I do get it going I will be using the ABS filament.

I assembled mine on the carton it came in on top of a small table in my shed, it gave me more height and a softer surface to work on just in case I dropped something, I didn’t.

The little instructions that came with it were useless and I got stuck a little with the Z, X and Y wires, then I found complete instructions on the Micro card and a video I stores for just in case, the micro card comes in the back of a USB stick.

I found the wires are a bit all over the place too and I intend getting them better when I have the printer running and I get to know all the limitations of travel for a good fixing point...

here’s what I see just looking at your setup...

The power supply box is too far from the body of the printer, and that will give you trouble with you cable travel once you get printing.

You also have the filament holder on the wrong way around, and if you reverse that the power box can then be brought closer.

You should move the printer closer to the right side of the table some more, and then do the same with the power box, and this will give you all the working room you need on the rest of the table.

You are still using the tape for your base, but you need to rub that quite heavily with a cloth and alcohol to get a clean area to stick your model on, you could try a glue stick application on top of the tape also.

I just use W5 (Windex) to clean the glass, and then an application of hair spray and spread that over the area of the glass where my model is going to sit, heat the platform to 40 degrees and your model will stay seated for the entire performance, when finished a quick rub of W5 and the glass surface is clean once more.

You’ve had failures before with the MS mini starting off so don’t expect this to be any better, I’m waiting till I get something bigger to make before I crank my beast into operation.

On your credit card glider, would it not be better lying flat to get a more stable platform starting out...?
