I currently have an HP Officejet Pro 8600 all in one printer. I need to purchase new ink so I am considering upgrading to a color laser printer because my current printer is getting old. One of the often stated advantages of laser over inkjet is a lower cost per page to print. The laser printer that I’m considering is the HP M283 CDW. When I do the calculations for both of these printers, assuming XL capacity for both, I get OfficeJet ( $0.0263 B, $0.09 C) and Laser ($0.033 B, $0.135 Color) cost to print per page. Based on my calculations the cost per page is higher for this laser printer than it is for my OfficeJet. This is different from what I’ve been reading. Am I missing something?

Well, for starters, it helps to understand that costs of genuine HP consumables
such as toner & ink are higher than most, due to the brand's market dominance.
Inks in particular, from well-known brand makers, actually cost significantly more
per ounce or ml than the most expensive perfumes!

There are reliable third-party sellers of consumables for all major brands
of printers to be found, especially if you're willing to spend some time
looking into reputations of said third parties.

There are also other options outside of the HP brand which are just as good.

I own a Xerox color laser/LED printer, and it even has a great-quality scanner.
Consumables(toner) are far less expensive from third parties with good reviews,
the printer is fairly small and quiet, and works admirably over a wi-fi connection.
Sure, it's bigger and noisier than a cheap inkjet, but it was designed and made
to be a longer-lasting printer than most ink printers, so it ends up being more
cost-effective in per-page print over the long run.

To summarize: inks in ink printers can dry out and cause problems,
while the dry plastic powders in laser/LED printers typically last far longer.
My Canon PRO-100 seems to now have some clogged nozzles
after a period of idle, while the Xerox laser fires up every time
with perfectly intended output.

Do you know if HP color laserjets can use toner from third party suppliers?

Yes, there are many third-party suppliers of consumables for HP toners.

Are they all the same? No. they are not.

ResellerRatings.com is a great evaluation reposit of reviews for such third-party
merchants, as are various sites found from a Google search.

Search specifically for reviews, and look for the supplier in quotes.
Put something like this in a Google search field:
"precisioncolors.com" ink quality reviews
or "HP toner" replacement quality supplier here for examples.

Some brief research can quickly weed out the scams and poor suppliers.
I found a reliable supplier of Xerox toners very soon after looking into
replacements, and found the seller on eBay at reduced cost.
As a result, I got 4 working sets of toner cartridges for the cost
of a single OEM-supplier set.
It's probably not as cost-effective for HP toners, but you should be able
to find similar savings for HP replacements.
