To be very clear, the only CLI-8 cartridges you will need are for the yellow (and you need a CLI-42 chip for that).

So, use your original CLI-42 set, but take the chip off of the yellow, discard that cartridge, and reinstall the yellow chip on a CLI-8 (any color will work).

Then buy a second set (or sets) of CLI-42 cartridges (empties are the way most go) and orange clips, and repeat the above.
You'll need a resetter.

I suggest you see the Jose Rodriguez ("The Jtoolman") YouTube channel. Watch his playlist CANON CLI-42 Complete Modification Process (total of 18 videos).

As everyone said the jello effect occurs only with the yellow OEM ink.

I draw the attention to this: the issue is not related to the 3rd party inks, but with the yellow OEM ink, that does not behave very well neither with plain water nor with other kind of inks. That's why Stratman said "multiple aggressive flushes with ammonia".

A little economic comparison to thinking:
PC42 Squezy Deluxe Kit with 8 tail clips - US$ 108,98
PC Bulk Ink Kits 2oz - US$ 36,50 (around 7~8 complete printing cycles)
You pay for the complete refilling tool set: 108,98 - 36,50 = US$ 72,48

If you want (that is highly recommended) a 2nd cart set, the CANON CLI-42 8 color ink pack (You need the electronic chip) - US$ 124,99 + 1xPC Flushed yellow cart US$ 7,00 + 1xPC Tail Clip US$ 1,00.

Total investment in the refilling tool set: 72,48 + 124,99 + 7,00 + 1,00 = US$ 205,47.

If you considering just 10 printing cycles (1 OEM comes with your printer + 1 OEM 2nd cart kit + 8 refilling) you get: 205,47 + 36,50 = US$ 241,97 / 10 = US$ 24,20 per cart kit, that comes lower than that, as you long as you refilling.

The trade off: You have to initially spend US$ 250,00. But remember, living is a trade off.
