Hello! Welcome to the forum!

Your printer uses both a Pigment Black cart for text printing only, AND a black dye cart used during photo printing. We don't know what cart is giving you the problem, but I'm assuming it's not printing text. Am I right?

In any event, we need to see a nozzle test print to help you out. You can post one here after 24 hours from your first post. In the meantime, do NOT print anything except nozzle test prints until we help sort this out, else you risk damaging the print head due to overheating without ink to cool it.

We need to know if you use OEM (Canon) carts or compatibles, or if you refill, and what ink and carts you use IF you refill. Please respond.

Another thing you can try in the meantime, is to test the purge unit (which primes the print head with ink after changing carts and cleans minor clogging). This testing requires flooding the "parking pads" (where the print head sits while idle) with Original Windex. You must be able to build up a pool of standing Windex atop the pads without it draining away after a minute, then let the printer go through a cleaning cycle, then observe if the pads appear dry afterwards (they should appear dry). Only a milliliter or two of Windex is required to flood the pad. If the pool still exists or the pads appear wet after cleaning, the purge system is clogged or blocked. If the Windex pool drains away after a minute before you close the cover and permit a cleaning cycle, there is a leak in the purge system. One of the hoses is probably dislodged. If you managed to get to the waste pads, you can easily reach the purge unit. Sometimes you can see a pulled-off hose on the rear edge of the pad. There is also another coming from the bottom of the pad. Let us know what you observe during the test.

OK Phil and welcome

When you have a problem and you wish to post a request for help can you please only post once
duplicating it doesnt help anybody, so can you please delete it.

Just follow turbguys advice as much as you can and then post back..
Thank you..

Hi Guys,

Thanks so much for your replies and in particular, Wayne for your detailed response. I have had some luck with another clean and it now appears to be printing. I cant quite work out why it is working now but I will take it! If things regress, I will most certainly action your advice and provide additional information
Apologies also for the lack of detail which I will ensure I provide next time. Apologies also for the double post which I didnt realise I had done (I am a newbie!)

Thanks,

Phil

The idea that the large pigment black cartridge is used for printing text and the small dye black cartridge is used for printing photos is common, probably because Canon makes comments like that but it is wrong. It has nothing to do with what is printed, only with what kind of paper you tell the printer you are printing on. If you tell the printer you are printing on plain paper, it will use the pigment black ink, it doesn't matter whether you are printing a photo or text. If you tell the printer you are printing on any kind of photo paper, it will use the dye black ink, it doesn't matter whether you are printing text or a photo.

This is why if the pigment black ink quits working on a printer, you can continue to use the printer for printing black text on plain paper by simply telling the printer you are using any photo paper such as matte. It will be much slower but it can work in an emergency (which is always the case when you find out your printer isn't working correctly).
