Trying to replicate an error message 009 from the service tools or find out if it exists, I tried to run the service tools versions 1050, 1074 and 2000 under Windows 8.1 64 bit. I used a Pixma 3600 for the test. I expected some error message or something greyed out, but instead the service tools all worked.

They seemed slower to respond than the newer versions 3200 and 3400, could this be the reason for the idea that the older versions don't work under 64 bit windows?

My only 64 bit computer is running Windows 8.1, I also have Win XP, Vista and 7 computers, but they are all 32 bit. So could users of 64 bit Win XP, Vista and 7 please test the older versions of the service tool?

I have only experienced the error codes 002 and 006 when using the service tools. Error 006 means that the printer has not entered service mode and error 002 means that a function not supported by the printer was attempted.

More error codes do exist, I have seen references to other error codes both on this forum and other websites.

So I searched for Canon service tool error codes and found a Russian site with a table of error codes. Here is a translation.

Here is the table of error codes:

Error list.jpg

Note the bottom line of the table. A cause for the service tools freezing could be an error in the printer.

Note the layout of the table is very similar to that of the Canon service manuals, so I think an official instruction for service tools exist. I'll search for that.

I haven't found error 009 yet, but I keep looking.

MG6150 I have put it into service mode and want to reset the ink absorber. i have read all the 11 pages of posts but can someone please clarify the following;
1. which service tool can I use and where can I download it?
2. do I need to have paper and ink in the printer when running the service tool?

Below is a thread with information regarding entering Service Mode and a link to download the Service Tool also, it’s slow so allow it time to refresh and display.

You don’t need paper or ink in your printer but it would be advisable to have them so you can print off the test page and results.

Entering Service Mode and using the Service Tool exe should not be done unless you know what you’re doing first, so please read up on it before attempting to use, it can be a very destructive application.

Hi,

Ad 1.
I think v3400 is most compatible for any ink type 525/526 printer.

Ad 2.
There are two options:
- no printhead installed and no ink tanks installed (there is no U051 error in service mode)
- printhead and complete set of ink tanks with their chips (chips may be empty, but not defective; better to have ink /liquid/ inside the tanks)

And two concerns:
- not every CST function require presence of paper and printhead with ink tanks (for example it is possible to download some EEPROM data without printhead installed)
- not sure, if ink absorber counter can be reset without ability to conduct "Test print" (so paper have to be present)

Some instructions how to enter Service Mode in similar printer:
Cannot start service mode on MG6220

The procedure for entering service mode on the MG6150 is the same as the procedure in post #1, with the exception that the stop/resume button is pressed and released five times instead of two.

You can read more in the service manual, for which you find a link in this post. The service manual is for an MG6120, but it is the same printer, just made for North America instead of Europe.

You also need a service tool, here is a post with a link for download of the newest known version V3400 and an explanation. This version supports the most printers and all Windows versions both 32 and 64 bit, from XP and up. The service tools only work with Windows and a USB connection must be used even if the printer might be wireless.

For best chance of successful service mode operations the printer must be fully functional with print head and inks present. Paper must also be present in the cassette and if the printer also has a rear tray for A4/Letter size paper it too must contain paper.

It seems some functions of the service tool work as stated by Lukasz without print head and paper, with a printer newer than the PGI-x20/CLI-x21 generation, but I don't have any printer newer than PGI-520/CLI-521, so I cannot test this. So Lukasz could you please write a little more about this new feature?

Little additions,

- in some cases CST have to be run with Administrator privileges
- there should be no mechanical errors before running any CST function; if is so, then "Error: code 009" will occur (simplest error is unclosed CD-tray cover - it affects "spur unit" position and possibly can harm carriage/printhead)

This new feature is "EEPROM save" button (first tab - "Main" tab). After running it, notepad-like window will pop up, filled with EEPROM informations (there is another "save" button to write those data to .txt file).

It allow for getting some EEPROM parameters even without printhead installed. Probably it was intended to allow verify error log when some critical printhead errors occurred (printing is only way to output EEPROM parameters in older printers).

To be fair, this function is inferior to the regular "Print -> EEPROM" function - it lacks RAW EEPROM dump (both printer data and printhead data).

Two versions of EEPROM exports:

Thank you very much for the info. You have increased our knowledge about the service tools :thumbsup

The error 009 was mentioned in a previous post, but no one seemed to know it. Thanks for telling us that it is caused by a mechanical error.

The "Save EEPROM" is a nice feature for those printers that support it. I found out that a two cartridge printer like the iP2700 supports it:

iP2700 EEPROM-save.jpg

Note the USA region. This is the result of a test changing the region, to see if that affected the region of the cartridges needed. It didn't, the printer didn't reject the cartridges, so like with the single ink tank printers a region change cannot change the region of the needed cartridges.
