FYI, my MP980 gave an warning, ink pads nearly full.

MP980 uses PGI-x20/CLI-x21 cartridges.

i downloaded V3400 from this thread, unpacked it, got into service mode, ran the V3400 tool but got an error of 06.

PeterBJ and Hat gave me some suggestions and turned out that V3400 service tool does not like any other USB printers along for the party.

I disconnected my 10 year old MP830, tried V3400 again and it worked !

see before and after EEPROMs

D= was 95% now 0%.

this forum is the best !

thx

J

Yes the service tools only work with a USB connection even if the printer you want to service has wireless capability.

It is also very important that only the printer you want to service is connected to the computer. Even an older printer of the PGI-5/CLI-8 generation can interfere with the service tools if it is connected to the computer used for service mode operations, even if the PGI-5/CLI-8 printer is not turned on!

I'm reviving this old thread just to say THANK YOU! to the contributors of this resource.

After days of searching for a way to revive my Canon Pixma MP990, I am very happy to have found what I needed here. I got the Ink Absorber warning for weeks and just clicked past it. A few days ago the 5B00 error code came up and I was stuck. Just earlier today I found the method for entering service mode but couldn't proceed past that until now. The v3400 service tool link I found here still works with no problems (from page 16). I ran a scan with MS Defender but overlooked the Edit that said it may have been flagged as trojan malware. Hopefully I'm still safe.

So for anyone else getting the "Ink Absorber Alost Full" message, or trying to solve the 5B00 Error, just read through this thread. The answers are here, the tool is here, and they all still work.

Now I just need to figure out how to get the the ink absorber pads to clean or replace them. I'm tired and will tackle that later.

I found no free download of the MP990 service manual, but a commercial download of the manual and parts catalog can be found here at 5$.

The MP980 is mechanically very similar to the MP990 so I think the MP980 manual and parts catalog will be useful for dismantling and reassembly. Here are free downloads of the service manual and the parts catalog.

I have never seen a download of service tool V3400 that contained any malware. Newer service tools for cartridge generations PGI-x50/CLI-x51 and newer might trigger virus warnings, probably due to the adding of key software by the vendor.

I also use and like the MP990 and I think its CCD scanner makes it a much better AIO than other models with CIS scanners.

Thank you for the links. I went with the $5 download.

So I got all my ink absorber pads clean out, dried and installed. I got the machine back together but had problems with what might be the pict bridge cable coming from the scanner bed. I didn't realize when I set the scanner bed aside I had set it on the end of the cable and damaged it. I was able to get it plugged in but it took more fiddling than normal. The machine is now powered up and I get a 5050 error code for a faulty AFE, or bad scanner cable communication. I'm pretty sure that's going to be the same cable I damaged. Just briefly looking online and I think it's the Pict Bridge cable QK1-5831, same part for the MP640. I can't seem to find one and I can't tell if it is even actually replaceable by the average know nothing like me. Before I disassemble this thing again, is it even possible to replace this cable? And is it still available somewhere?

A new printer/scanner is looking better and better now. But I also hate throwing away a good fixable machine.

Thanks in advance.

If you are very lucky the cable and the connector is not damaged, but the cable is just not properly attached to the connector.

Canon uses at least 3 different connectors for flat foil cables. In one you just push the cable in. In the other two you will have to unlock the connector before attaching the cable and lock the connector after the cable has been attached.

Here is a post showing the locking connectors.

Here it is!

This tool provides service mode operations for several Canon printers of the PGI-x20/CLI-x21, PGI-x25/CLI-x26 and PGI-9 generations.

Here is a list of supported printers, from the Russian download site:

iP2700; iP3600; iP4600; iP4700; ip4840; ip4850;
PRO9000; PRO9500;
IX7000;
MP240; MP250; MP260; MP270; MP280; MP480; MP490; MP540; MP550; MP560; MP620; MP630; MP640; MP980; MP990;
MX320; MX330; MX860;
MG5140; MG5150

I've tested the tool with a Canon MP540 and Win Vista Home Premium 32 bit. I guess It will also work with Win XP and 7 and maybe 64 bit versions of the OS's (Not tested). Neither AVG Internet Security nor MBAM (Malwarebytes Antimalware) found any threats in the download.

For download links see "Updates" at the bottom of this post.

Instructions for use: First the printer must enter service mode. No other printers should be connected to the computer. This is procedure for my MP 540, from the service manual, the procedure for your printer might be different:

i. With the machine power turned off, while pressing the Stop button, press and hold the ON
button. (DO NOT release the buttons).
ii. When the Power LED lights in green, while holding the ON button, release the Stop button.
(DO NOT release the ON button.)
iii. While holding the ON button, press the Stop button 2 times, and then release both the ON
and Stop buttons. (Each time the Stop button is pressed, the Alarm and Power LEDs light
alternately, Alarm in orange and Power in green, starting with Alarm LED.)
iv. When the Power LED lights in green, the machine is ready for the service mode operation.

The LCD display now shows two lines of text: 1: Service mode and 2: Idle.

Before starting the service tool, make sure that both cassette and rear tray contains paper, else service mode operations might fail, as you cannot predict which paper source the printer will use.

Now now run the unpacked ServiceTool_V2000.exe file. No installation necessary.

You now see this window with two tabs. Click thumbs to enlarge

and

I've tried only the "Test Print" and "EEPROM" buttons on the "Main" tab. You can change several settings with the program, but unless absolutely necessary don't try other operations , especially if you don't have the service manual. You might delete info or change vital settings. I've made such mistakes my self, therefore this warning. Link here: http://www.nifty-stuff.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=49752#p49752

Click the "test print" on main tab and the the text is greyed out. Now wait for the familiar style test print with extended nozzle check etc. Don't panic even if it seems to take forever.. You will eventually get the printout and this pop-up window: Click the thumbs to enlarge, and click the enlarged cropped image again to expand to full size.

and cropped for less JPG-compression: and the pop-up:

It is seen from the cropped image, that this printer has a problem with the printhead.

You may now proceed with service mode operations. Click the "EEPROM" button on the main tab. This produces the EEPROM info printout, you also get the option to choose paper source for this printout. This operation also takes long time to finish. Click the thumbs to enlarge:

and the pop-ups and

Exit service mode by turning the printer off using the printer's Power On/Off button, and close the Service tool application.

Note: The service tools only work with a USB connection, so you will have to use a USB cable with a wireless printer. Also note that all versions work with 32 bit Windows but only versions 3200 and 3400 also work with 64 bit Windows.

Update1: See this post for a download of version 3400 that works at this time of updating, October 29 2015.

Older updates were removed as the links no longer work.
Where is the actual download for this version?

Links sadly don't last forever and searching the web for service tools and service manuals might be risky. But this post has got the service tool v3400 attached as a .rar archive. The archive is safe.

Be aware that this version can only be used on printers of the PGI-x20/CLI-x21 and PGI-x25/CLI-x26 cartridge generations, x is a region dependent number. Newer printers need newer versions of the service tools (higher version number). the use of a too old service tool will lock service mode.

The service tool v3400 is safe to use on the Canon MP560 as that printer is of the PGI-x20/CLI-x21 cartridge generation.

A service manual and a parts catalog for your printer might also be useful. Here is the service manual and here is the parts catalog.
