The old Canon printers were far sturdier with reliable print heads, but even they have a limited lifespan..
This is certainly so for the consumer dye printers.

But in the photo printers the PRO-9500 (pigment) had a rather short living printhead.
No idea if the PRO-9000 (dye) head was based on this one, but the ones of both the PRO-10 (pigment) and PR0-100 (dye) live much longer.

Canon printheads are a consumable item and fail after some time of usage, please read the attached description which explains the internal wear; it might very well be that several generations of printheads over time have improved the situation but it's the ink volume at the end which counts and has been pushed through the nozzles. And whatever cleaning process cannot restore the printhead - the nozzles - back to a 'as new' condition, so every refurbished printhead will just use up the remaining printing capabilities whatever that is. All these refurbished printheads come from salvaged printers. I only would recommend users of Canon printers to buy a spare (new) printhead at the time they are still available as a genuine Canon unit.

Since I refill with genuine Canon ink, I haven't encountered many problems.
However, every printhead will fail sooner or later—fingers crossed!

However, every printhead will fail sooner or later—
I had a print count of over 52,000 on my faithful ip4500 using one head on I.S. inks, and as you say it eventually lost the magenta colour block.. Let’s see any Canon printer do that now.. :ep
My Pro 9500 is still hanging in there..:hugs
