I have an old Pro9000 Mark II sitting around that I decided to recommission. The last time I bought a replacement head they were $200, so I was hoping I might find a cheaper deal since they're so old.

I decided to try an item on eBay that was listed for $70 new. It was coming from China, so I was a little skeptical, but I figured maybe it was open package or an off-brand manufacturer. I was willing to take the risk as long as it actually printed.

To be fair I was impressed by the free shipping, there was accurate tracking and arrived in 7 days. But when I opened the package I was greeted with an obviously refurbished unit that was still wet, had some kind of oily residue (smelled faintly of WD-40), bits of ink around the head, and worst of all a gouge on the circuit board.


Needless to say I filled a return. I'm not too worried about it one way or the other, I'm not even really that upset, but just wanted to share my experience in case anyone is looking at similar options.

I ended up ordering a new head from a local supplier. Although much more expensive at $180, hopefully it'll be good.

I do have some old ink cartridges with third-party ink that I don't mind wasting. I'm curious if I don't end up shipping it back, does anyone think I should I test it, or is there risk the scratched circuit board could cause electrical damage?

BTW - This is what I got back from the seller after asking for a return:

"Hello, thank you for your purchase. Please rest assured that it's normal to see some marks or traces on the product. These occur as part of our supplier's quality inspection process before shipment. Additionally, you might notice some liquid; this is protective fluid applied to keep the print head from clogging. We suggest you go ahead and install the product for use. Should you have any further questions, feel free to reach out."

Apparently a damaged circuit board is a normal part of quality inspection.

Update, the eBay seller is giving me the run around.

I was feeling generous and tried testing the printhead. I was willing to consider if it actually printed fine, I wouldn't press it, but after wasting ink on a cleaning cycle, it showed streaking on almost all the heads, and the cyan didn't even work.

So not only is it a used head, it's damaged, and defective, when they advertised it as new and unused. They then tried to tell me to soak the head in solution and clean it! I just have to wait until the 12th when I'll be able to escalate it with eBay.

As for the order from the local vendor, I didn't hear anything after placing the order on the 6th, so I contacted them today (10th) and they informed me that they expect to receive their stock order on Thursday (13th). I guess they don't keep them in stock and have to special order them. I'll have to wait another week before receiving it.

It would seem there’s a lot of refurbished heads doing the rounds, be careful..

To be honest, I'm happy to use refurbished products and save them from the landfill as long as they perform, but this is just non-functioning.

I've tried resuscitating clogged printheads myself multiple times with no success. I would be happy if a business were able to reclaim printheads, and wishfully hope it could be true with better equipment, but I haven't seen any evidence online.

At the very least I would expect an honest refurbisher to post nozzle check prints. All the businesses on eBay simply post stock photos of the product.
