@Adriatix: I’m totally certain that it was a clog. Why only the magenta color and why on a quasi-new printhead that was well cared for ? I can’t say.
After seeing the problem in the nozzle test I ran a normal cleaning cycle of the magenta group. No improvement at all. Then a deep cleaning, No changes. Any possible excess of ink due to overfilling would have been sucked by the cleanings. If it hadn’t been a real clog, the issue would have been fixed. Furthermore, when I removed the printhead to soak the nozzles in cleaning fluid for some hours, I checked the bottom area and it was normal; no pools of ink whatsoever.
I refill using a electronic scale up to 33-33.5 grams. I’ve tested the maximum capacity of a PGI-72 cart and you can fill it up to a weight of almost 35 gram (including the orange clip). At this weight, the output pad is very wet and leaks maybe a drop or two of ink. This is it, no more ink comes out. In fact, it won't even drop a single drop unless you shake the cart a bit when removing the clip. Therefore, I concur with @The Hat that you can’t really overfill PGI-72 carts. Not to the point of making a pool of ink on the nozzles area when the cartridge is installed,
Anyway, to be on the safe side, I always refrain from surpassing 33.5 grams.
Since that problem I’ve been printing and performing nozzle checks on a regular basis. So far, everything is perfectly fine.
