I was asking about if you get a new printer like the MP560. Are there cheap third party cartridges available for it?

I had been using it past when some of the tanks were showing as empty. Perhaps this burnt something out on the print head or clogged something on the print head. Visually, the print head looks fine. What can I do to attempt to fix/repair the print head? New ones on Ebay are $57 delivered. If they cost that much, I'd rather buy a totally new printer for $78 at WMT for the Canon Pixma MP560 or the Brother MFC295CN for $60-70 at Staples or OfficeMax.

When the print head is "bad" is it because the ink is dried or because something is short-circuited or broken in the electrical connections?

Continuing to run a printer after the ink tanks are empty will not cause the problem you are having. I suspect that during the course of removing the print head and dismantling the printer, you caused an electrical problem such as a short or broken connection. I have mentioned before, you really can't know if the problem is just in the print head or just in the printer or both, until you get another working iP3000 and swap parts. But then you run the risk of propagating failures from one bad unit to the next and it just isn't worth pursuing. If you really wanted to stick with the iP3000 and you got another one, it would make sense to just abandon your broken printer with its print head and start using the replacement. It would not be wise to experiment by swapping parts or you will likely end up with two dead printers. It's time to "retire" your defective iP3000.

If you are located in the USA, there are times when Staples will offer $50 towards the purchase of a new printer when you recycle an old printer. And you can get $2 each for your old cartridges (up to ten per month) so don't throw them away.

It sounds like you have researched your options for a new printer. Let us know what you finally decide.

Consolidating this message from a previous deleted thread. ....

Printer wont turn on with print head installed. Removed, will turn on.
If turned on with print head removed, will turn on, and can insert the
print head and will stay on. However, with the printer already on and the
print head inserted, when I go to print a page, it will turn the printer
off and not print the page.

Is the print head destroyed in terms of the electrical connections? Or
can I wash it out with water? If washing it out, do I just wash the the
very bottom?
Should I remove the 2 screws and only wash the white ceramic part?

Canon Pixma IP3000 troubleshoot - nozzle test pulls the page to print,
then stops and shuts off the machine. I was never able to get this far before. I think I made progress after using the "windex trick" by spraying windex in the purge area on the 2 white ceramic sponges.

Previously Ive taken the machine apart, cleaned out the "diaper pad" waste
ink sponge traps, cleaned the sponge on the left, cleaned the 2 ceramic
sponges on the right, cleaned the "wiper blades."

Machine will only occasionally turn on. It WONT turn on if the print head
is already inserted. Is there a short circuit or other problem in the
print head?

Now what can I try?

As we're on tread #14 with this printer now, youre still not prepared to give up on it.
I still think you should buy a new print head, it will see you fix you problem one way or another.

Its become a psychological quest now, and yes, perhaps it would be smarter and easier to give up. I am not ready to concede defeat in man vs printer though as Ive come so far and overcome so many error messages.

If nothing else, others in the future could read this thread and find ways to fix their own.

I cant justify paying $57 or so for a new print head for a printer only when brand new All-In-Ones cost $60 and up.

I never said you should give up, far from it.
I said you should get the new print head and that would be a great victory rather than defeat..

If I could get it for far less than $57, like FREE, then its possible. I did get 2 Canon Pixma IP6000D printers for free, off freecycle, which is in most major cities in the USA. Ive gotten one of them to work so far. However the printheads are different sizes 6000d vs 3000 so I cant swap them

Well my advice to you then is to keep looking on freecycle, you might even get an ip3000 print head there
or you could try other models like : 560i, 850i, i560, i850, iP3100, iX4000, iX5000, MP700, MP710, MP730, MP740 they all use the same print head..

Thanks so much for the compatibility tip! Today I visited 5-6 thrift stores. Most of the electronics appeared to be junk and labeled, "as is." Mostly HPs and Epson as far as printer brands I saw.
