Canon PG540 cartridge and chip - does it actually count times used ?

When the fuel gauge on the car is low I put more petrol in and the gauge goes up.
When the PG540 ink tank is partially used I drill a small hole in the top and use a hyperdermic needle to add ink, a top up. However the supply levels on the data page do not move, the indicator steadily goes down, totally ignoring the refill ink. I can keep going but eventually, even though I know that there is ink in the cartridge the printer refuses to print anymore and says the cartridge must be replaced. So does the chip count the number of times it prints and has a set limit which when reached it will print no more, regardless of the ink inside ?

Please be aware that there is no sensor for the actual ink level in the cartridges, the firmware of the printer just counts down the volume by counting the ink drops and their volume, and the firmware does not take into account any in between refill actions since the cartridges are not designed for that by Canon. A resetter may be available for your type of cartridges or you print as long as the firmwre counter reaches the point that you can disable this ink usage counter alltogether.

When the ink in a cartridge runs low you will get a warning that the cartridge is nearly empty and printing is halted. You can resume printing by pressing the Stop/Resume button. When the cartridge is considered empty printing is halted again and you are told that the cartridge is empty. By pressing and holding the Stop/resume button for 5 or maybe10 seconds you can disable the ink monitoring and print again. You will need this disabling to print with refilled cartridges, both cartridges you filled yourself and remanufactured cartridges you bought.
