I am looking for some advice on which CISS system to use with a MX860 printer. Alternatively a good source for ink to permit me to reink would be appreciated. I live in Australia.

Somebody must be using a CIS that works by now.

Take a look at RIHAC out of Australia. (http://www.rihac.co.uk/index.php) I had an email conversation with the owner a couple years back and found him to be knowledgable and friendly. His CISS systems look to be very well constructed.

They don't list a CISS for the MX860 on the website but an email to them might at least give you insights on why they don't yet, in other words, there may be a technical reason why they don't offer it yet which could save you some headaches.

I've just entered the world of CISS after experimenting with it about 10 year ago (unsuccessfully trying to make my own for a HP Deskjet). I will have to admit that I started out with an Ebay unit, althought it appears to be well contructed (Piano Book). I have successfully installed in a MX860 after several modifications and problems. Due to the low cost of these units in this day and age, I disregarded any warranty.

1. I found it easier to cut out the plastic covering the print head carriage space on each end (basically you cut out triangles of plastic at each end). I used a Dremel-like tool. This allows the ink tubing to run directly out to the side of the print head, otherwise it needs to run out the center to avoid fouling under the plastic. When I had it set up with the tubing coming out the center, I found the tubing could still get fowled up under the forementional plastic.

2. You need a small plastic plug to fit into the hople on the right to trick the printer into thinking the cover is closed.

3. I use a piece of rubber to prevent the cover closing completely, thus allowing the tubing to move freely.

I used the silicone grommets supplied with the system but I had problems with cyan from day 1. It turns out there was a small air leak in the cyan ink tank and it was sucking air near the ink exit port. I replaced this and no problems since.

I have found that the tanks need to be elevated about 1-1.5cm above the base of the printer (sayhalf to 3/4 inch).

Have printed about 200 sheets since all of the above. Mostly photos, no issues.

Not a great choice for a CISS but in my case I bought the printer first before becoming interested in CISS.

The other thing I forgot to mention is this printer uses a different ink tank order to the IP 4600, which was the printer my CISS was designed for. I had to move these around a bit and then had to trim a couple of the silicone ink tubes to a new length. No big issue though.
