Either ink is good. The Precision Inks Image Specialist ink looks closest to Canon OEM ink output to me when using Canon ICC Profile and Canon papers. The Hobbicolor inks have a more saturated (vibrant/electric) look which some people prefer. Either ink properly profiled with a specific paper will have excellent output.

Bottom line: You won't go wrong with either ink to start with and can always buy the other ink on your next purchase, though I would not mix the two inks in the same cartridge or in a set of cartridges if optimal color output for your given setup is desired. (Purge the cartridges before filling with a different manufacturer's ink.)

*** You can mix residual Canon OEM ink left over in an "empty" cartridge with either Hobbicolors or Image Specialists/Precision Ink ink and not suffer particulate sedimentation or wild color shifts***

The price difference is a lot closer if you compare apples to apples. PrecisionColors has a 12 oz. kit also......
US $18.88 plus US $7.00 shipping.

Where have you been purchasing your Inktec ink from?

There is no technical reason to buy your pigment black ink (for the large cartridge) and the dye inks (for the small cartridges) from the same place or that they be the same brand.

If you have refilled some of the large cartridges with the PGI-5BK ink from Inktec, they will be clogged and will not work very well on the second refill unless you thoroughly purge them first.

This is where I have been purchasing my Inktec http://www.inkjetcartridge.com/bki58bcbundle.html

I realize I don't need the same brands but I would rather not buy my 3 colors from Inktec and my 2 blacks from Precision. Once source is much easier. I have been using the PGI-5BK ink from Inktec for sometime now with no issues. I would like to keep it that way so rather then finding out the hard way I'll switch now.

I think Inktec was my also my original source for convenience. They were prefilled syringes.

I haven't mentioned this but my Cyan always has minor issues and after reading the posts on the board lately it seems everyone is in the same boat. Hopefully this will take care of that problem as well.

BTW I'm on my second Print head. Before Inktec I was buying prefilled carts from databazarr

You don't want to buy your two blacks from another source, all the dye inks, including your CLI-8Bk should be purchased from the same source, in this case, injetcartridge, which is the same place (and the only place in the USA that I am aware of) I buy from. But they do have the PGI-220 pigment black ink, it's just that you can't buy just the bottles, you have to buy a kit and it's much more expensive.

Also, the clogging problem with the Inktec pigment black inks is not a problem for the print head, only for the cartridges and the waste pads.

Ok i ordered all my ink from precision yesterday. Is that alright? I thought Precision was a good source.

Ok I went to the injetcartridge website. It seems they to have prefilled syringes. So inktec is not the only one who uses the convenient prefilled syringes?

These are them PGI-220 http://www.inkjetcartridge.com/bki9020d.html ?

Next time I Order I will see if that place is cheaper then Precision and use them instead. How did you find out that they use Pigment? they make no mention of it on the site. Maybe I haven't searched deep enough.

Yes, Precision Colors is a reputable source. The owner posts frequently on this forum under the name of Mikling. He is an all around nice and dependable guy and will answer your questions about his Image Specialists ink. Unless he's on vacation, which he informs people on his eBay web site, Mikling ships fast and in appropriately protective packaging. From a quality and service perspective you could not reasonable ask for more.

FYI - there is another Image Specialists ink seller/e-tailor participant on this forum: England-based Websnail and his www.octoink.co.uk web site. Depending on where you reside, final costs may be different - England vs Canada originated shipping costs. From all appearances, you will not go wrong dealing with either of these gentlemen, and the difference may only be in the final cost to you, primarily from shipping costs (currency exchange rates not withstanding).

Yes, it's alright that you ordered all your ink from Precision Colors. I was only suggesting that if you still have some Inktec dye in bottle/syringes, you can continue to use them (they go in the thin cartridges) until you run out and then you can switch over to Precision Colors. But for the thick cartridge, you should switch over immediately.

The prefilled syringes that inkjetcartridge sells are made by Inktec. They are the only supplier in the USA that I know of. However, their prefilled cartridges are not necessarily made by Inktec, so I don't recommend buying them.

Your link to the PGI-220 ink is correct but since they sell two bottles in a kit for $12 as opposed to $3 for individual bottles for their other inks, it ends up costing twice as much.

You know which inks are pigment by which cartridge they go in. The PGI prefix stands for PiGment Ink and CLI stands for CoLor Ink, which really means dye ink and includes the CLI-8BK (black).
