1) When Power on the printer shows Error: "Close Upper Cover", the Cover is closed for sure. Not able to do anything after that, even not able to power off. Has to unplug the power cord.

Attached please find the photo I took about the Error.

(2) Before this, the printer showing Error:"Call for Service".
I google for a while, did entry maintenance mode and select replace "CPU". Then power off.
After power on this happens.

It does not function now?

(3) I have this Canon iPF6100 24 inch printer for over 8 years. Always using Canon's ink cartridges. The 12 cartridges still good before this error.

Never used aftermarket cartridges.

I am trying to fix it by myself.
I downloaded the <<ipf6100 service manual.pdf>> (367 pages), and reading it now.

New to this site, I will be really appreciate if anyone can help or give me some direction.
Is it even possible to fix by myself?

I am in Canada, How much Canon Service going to charge me?

Thanks a lot!

I found the service manual here for others to check out and possibly find the cause of the problem. According to page 2-61 in the service manual the top cover sensor is an optical interrupter. Could the light blocking sensor arm by accident have broken off or be bent out of alignment?

Hi @Oakville, you’ve got yourself into a bit of a conundrum and you may have wiped/moved the EPROM memory and you’ll now need to reset it.

Take the same steps you did before to enter Service Mode and follow the procedures in Chapter 7 (Page 330), service mode is suppose to work when everything else wont.

While in service mode you can also display, you last previous errors (up to 20) this can help to decipher some of your earlier problems and there is also an I/O Display, this helps explain information on each sensors and switch.

O’ the bad news is, Canon won’t help with technician information because the machine is to old, they might offer a discount to you on a newer model.

Sorry..

Thank you so much for your input @PeterBJ.

I checked the "light blocking sensor arm", it seems alright.
Also try to use a small metal scale insert into the sensor slot to block the light.
No luck yet.

Next I have to disassembly the top, see what I can find over the sensors.

Much Appreciate!

Good Morning @The Hat .

I try to enter Service Mode by follow the procedures in Chapter 7 (Page 330) by "Feeder Selection + Information" buttons holds during power on.
But it still stop at the "Close Upper Cover" error.

I also try the next Mode which is download firmware mode, which can bypass the error or maybe not the error yet?
The printer went into firmware download mode without any error, and I can use the firmware tool "see" the printer.
It's already the latest firmware version 1.42, there is nothing I can do above that.

Does this means my PCB board still good?
I hope.

I agree with you, Canon Service won't help at this point.

Thanks for your input!

I will read the disassembly section of the manual and check these:
  1. Cover sensor.
  2. Cable between the sensor and PCB board.
  3. The PCB board itself.
Please let me know if you have any other suggestion.

Have a nice day.
